The medicinal plant of the year has been announced annually since 1999 by the interdisciplinary study group for the history of the development of medicinal plants at the Institute for the History of Medicine at the University of Würzburg. In 2012, a plant was chosen together with the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF). For the first time in 2020, the German Medical History Museum (Ingolstadt), the German Pharmacy Museum (Heidelberg) and the Chair for Aroma and Olfactory Research at the University of Erlangen, which was established in 2018, took part.
Between 1987 and 1989, the Association of German Druggists (VDD) declared a medicinal plant of the year.
The selection of the medicinal plant of the year is intended to emphasize the importance of plants in medicine and their pharmaceutical use. (Wikipedia)
