With bright yellow flowers, the witch hazel defies even February, when it is freezing cold and there is snow. Witch hazel is a member of the witch hazel family and grows on rocky ground throughout North America. Its appearance is similar to that of the hazelnut, except that its young branches are densely covered with silvery hairs.

Witch hazel is quite easy to recognize because it has a unique canopy shape and an elongated, 3 to 6 inch (7.5 to 15 cm) long, alternate leaf with a dark green upper surface and a pale green lower surface. The leaves have coarsely toothed edges. In winter it is usually the only tree that blooms. The plant grows with multiple stems and forms a disordered cluster. It has bright yellow flowers with strap-shaped petals and grows long and spindly if it doesn't get enough sun. Bark and twigs are typically light brown and gray, depending on location. As it ages, the bark develops rough patches and becomes flaky.

Witch hazel is used as a skin care agent in cosmetics, skin and body care products. It is used as a toner for dry and damaged skin to restore its suppleness.
