Sweet clover is a biennial to perennial plant and can grow to a height of between 30 and 200 cm. The stems are erect and branched. They are mostly bald and only slightly hairy in the upper area. The leaves are arranged alternately and have petioles and leaf blades. The pinnate leaf blade has three stalked leaflets, of which the middle one is longer. There are 6 to 14 pairs of lateral nerves on the leaflets. The leaf teeth are blunt to pointed, but irregular and reach almost to the base of the leaflet. The stipules are lanceolate and usually entire. The racemose inflorescences are 4 to 10 centimeters long and contain 30 to 70 flowers. The flower stalk is about as long as the bell-shaped calyx. The flowers are zygomorphic and fivefold with a double perianth. The five petals are yellow and the corolla has the typical shape of a butterfly flower. The wings are longer than the shuttle and are fused to the shuttle at their base. The only carpel is glabrous. Flowering time is from June to September. The fruits are one to two seeded.

🛑 Must not be taken with blood-thinning tablets. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist to be on the safe side. The coumarin should be consumed in moderation, it is poisonous in high doses.

The Celts considered it a sacred and venerable magical plant. For them it was a symbol of life force and therefore one of the indispensable herbs in the Druids' magic cauldron.

When dried, sweet clover can be used as a moth remedy. It's good for the soul. That's why you hang a freshly filled linen bag in the cupboards every year and leave the tufts hanging freely in the rooms so that well-being can reach your heart through your nose.

You can mix sweet clover with many other herbs, for example with violets or cowslips for good sleep, with mallow or eyebright for the eyes, with figwort or marigold for the lymph glands.

If you want to make a herbal pillow, you can make one yourself using dried sweet clover powder and equal parts marshmallow, mallow leaves, chamomile and linseed. The herbal pillow is either warmed up and placed on it, or brewed with hot water. You can use this to better apply it to bumps and tooth ulcers.

Sweet clover is a calcium smuggler plant.

Hildegard von Bingen: The expressed juice of sweet clover flowers, dripped warm into the ears, takes away the pain. Mixed with vinegar and rose oil and beaten, it alleviates the headache.
