The saw palmetto is a creeping rootstock and has several trunks close together. It develops almost black, plum-like drupes from racemose inflorescences that are about the size of a euro coin. The light green or silvery-white leaves of the saw palmetto form a round fan with around 20 leaflets. The petiole is covered with sharp teeth or spines, hence the name. The petioles can be 60 to 90 cm long. The leaves are 60 to 90 cm wide and divided into 60 to 120 cm long leaflets. The small flowers are yellow-white and grow in densely covered panicles up to 60 cm long. The saw palmetto fruit forms a large, red-black drupe when ripe. The approximately 2.5 cm large berries appear at the end of summer as green to brown berries that ripen to a purple-black color.

🛑 The use of saw palmetto should be avoided if you have blood clotting disorders, liver disease or a pancreatic disorder. Please do not use during pregnancy, breastfeeding and children. The plant increases fertility and reduces the effectiveness of birth control pills.

The fruits taste a bit sweet, the dried ones don't taste as good.

Indians eat the fruits to expand consciousness and prepare for sexual ecstasy. To do this, they make a pressed juice from berries and a little water, which is then drunk after it has been fermented.

Tea applications are used less, alcoholic extracts are used more.

Sabal oil (saw palmetto oil) is also used for massages, it enlarges and firms the breasts and is a sought-after remedy in tantra.
