Red clover grows up to 45 cm tall and grows from a long, deep taproot. It has slender, hairy and hollow stems. The leaves are alternate, divided into three leaflets and green with a light crescent in the outer half of the leaf. The leaflets are 1.25 to 3 cm long and 1.25 cm wide and finely toothed with pronounced V-notches. The pink to red flowers appear in round heads from May to September.

White clover (Trifolium repens) is used like red clover, but it also has gout and rheumatism as additional indications.
