The raspberry grows from a central cane. The side shoots form compound leaves with three, five or seven leaflets. The plants grow to about 2.4 m tall and have thorns. The flowers appear in late spring in short clusters that form on the side shoots. The flowers are less than 1/2 inch in diameter and have five white petals. The fruits develop in summer and early autumn. Each fruit is actually a collective fruit consisting of drupes around a central core. When picked, the drupes separate from the core, leaving a cavity in the middle.
