The Pendant amaranth is an annual plant with bright red flower tails. It grows to a height of 90 to 240 cm and grows to a width of 30 to 90 cm in full sun. It blooms from July until the first frost. The red flowers are very small and have no petals. They bloom in hanging, tassel-like panicles that are 30 to 60 cm long. The seeds ripen in September.

🛑 Pendant amaranth should not be used by people with rheumatoid arthritis, gout or kidney disease. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should avoid the plant and it is also not suitable for infants.

In the kitchen, the leaves can be cooked or eaten raw. The seeds (amaranth) are used as a grain, in cakes, bread and so on.

The plant was used as an offering in religious ceremonies, which is why the Spanish colonial rulers suppressed its cultivation.
