Mugwort grows between 90 and 180 cm high and has an upright trunk. It is purple or dark reddish-brown in color and woody with age. The leaves of mugwort are deeply lobed, alternate and grow up to 10 cm long. The largest leaves are at the base of the plant and become smaller and narrower towards the tip. The upper side of the leaves is green and often hairless, while the underside is white or silvery with fine hairs. The deeply cut lobes are narrowly aromatic. The flowers are very small, inconspicuous, reddish-brown or yellow disc flowers that bloom in late summer/early fall. They reproduce mainly via rhizomes.
