Motherwort tastes bitter and has a pungent smell.

The motherwort is an upright shrub that can grow up to 2 m high and 90 cm or more wide. The leaves vary in size and shape along the trunk. they are dark green on the upper side and pale on the underside. The lower leaves are deeply lobed with large teeth and may resemble maple or oak leaves. They can grow up to 7.5 cm long and wide and are hairy. The taller the plant, the smaller the leaves become with smaller lobes and teeth. At the top of the plant, the leaves are usually small, narrow and not lobed. The stems are square, hairy and branch only at the upper part of the plant. The hairy, pale pink to lavender flowers grow in whorls alternately on the stem and on the leaf buds at the upper part of the plant. They bloom from June to early September. The calyx remains on the plant throughout the winter and becomes brown and stiff when dry. There are 4 nuts inside the sepals.

🛑 An overdose can cause vomiting and a feeling of thirst!!! Motherwort has an effect on the uterus and should therefore be on the prohibited list during pregnancy. During birth, tea and fresh plant essence promote labor.

In the kitchen, the flowers can be used to flavor pea soups, as a flavoring for beer or to make tea.

Sophocles of Medea reported on a witch who digs her herbs naked. Even today, naked as newborns, shamans go to collect herbs out of reverence for the plant devas (angels) on whose help they depend.
