The marigold is an annual plant that grows 30 to 60 cm high. It has branched, spreading or erect stems. The leaves are oblong and lance-shaped, about 5 to 18 cm long and hairy on both sides. The edges can be smooth, wavy or even slightly serrated. The flowers are yellow or orange and have a 5 to 7.5 cm flower head with two rows of hairy bracts. The flowers appear year-round in warmer climates. Some flowers have multiple rows of ray florets, while others only have one. Varieties that are particularly rich in resin and multi-row flowers are said to be better suited for medicinal purposes. The fruit is a small curved achene (closed fruit).

🛑 Some people may have an allergic reaction to marigold.

In the kitchen, marigold flowers can brighten up a salad or they can also be used dried as a spice.

The marigold becomes a weather oracle if the flowers have not opened by seven in the morning, as rain is to be expected during the day.

Love oracles like Margarite's are possible, "he loves me, he doesn't love me, he loves me..."

It can be added to fish, game, soups, rice, egg dishes and cakes and replaces real saffron.

Marigolds rightly belong in every vegetable garden because they drive away harmful organisms through their root exudates.

Marigold

Hildegard von Bingen: If you have a sore head, squeeze the juice from the flowers and leaves of the marigold and use this juice, water and rye flour to make a dough and cover your head with it, bandage it with a cloth and put a hat over it. He should leave the dough on the head until it is torn, then he should take it away. He does this for nine days. Hildegard used marigolds primarily in veterinary medicine.
