Several years ago I bought a calendar by Hildegard von Bingen. Unfortunately I don't know who this was from. But I thought this was so great that I started writing it down step by step and sorting it out. In any case, I hope you enjoy reading and would also like to point out that this does not replace a doctor!!
Hildegard von Bingen (*1098 in Bermersheim vor der Höhe (site of the baptismal church) or in Niederhosenbach (the residence of her father Hildebrecht von Hosenbach at the time); †September 17th 1179 in the Rupertsberg monastery near Bingen am Rhein) was a Benedictine nun, abbess, poet, composer and an important polymath. In the Roman Catholic Church she is venerated as a saint and doctor of the church. In addition, the Anglican, the Old Catholic and the Protestant Churches also commemorate them with memorial days.
Hildegard von Bingen is considered the first representative of German mysticism in the Middle Ages. Her works deal with, among other things, religion, medicine, music, ethics and cosmology. She was also an advisor to many personalities. An extensive correspondence from her has been preserved, which also contains clear admonitions to high-ranking contemporaries, as well as reports about long pastoral trips and her public preaching activities.
On October 7, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. Saint Hildegard became a Doctor of the Church (Doctor Ecclesiae universalis) and extended her veneration to the universal church. Her relics are in the parish church of Eigingen.

Herbs, plants and trees
The Columbine
“...And the person in whom scrofelles begin to grow often eats raw columbine and the scrofelles decrease.”
Scrofels are swollen lymph glands on the neck, including polyps. According to Hildegard, the sick person should have a columbine plant in the garden, flower bed or on the windowsill and eat a fresh leaf from it every day. This application has also proven to be effective for the onset of tonsillitis. In winter, use columbine tincture from the pharmacy as a substitute (place 1-3 drops directly into the mouth).
Aloe and jaundice
“...And whoever has jaundice, let him put aloe in cold water, and in the morning and at bedtime let him drink it, and he will be cured...”
Application: You put aloe in a glass of water and let it steep for several hours, then drink the water without stirring, leaving the remaining aloe that is left at the bottom of the glass, as aloe has a strong laxative tendency.
The apple
“But the fruit of that tree is tender and easy to digest and when eaten raw it does no harm to healthy people... But raw apples are more harmful to sick people because they are weak. But those boiled and fried are good for both the sick and the healthy. But when they get old and wrinkled. As happens in winter, they are good to eat raw for both the sick and the healthy."
For healthy people, the apple is optimal in any form, cooked or raw, while sick people and those with weak stomachs tolerate seasoned, wrinkled or cooked apples better.
The apple bud oil for headaches
“And whoever suffers from migraines in the head due to a weak liver or spleen, or from foul juices of the abdomen or stomach, let him take the first sprouts, i.e. H. the buds of the apple tree and put them in tree oil, and he warm them in a vessel in the sun, and in the evening, when he goes to sleep, he anoint his head with this oil and do this often, and his head will be better. “
Production: You collect a handful of fresh apple blossom buds, put them in a white glass bottle and pour pure olive oil over the flower buds. The mixture is exposed to the sun for about 4 weeks and shaken often. Then strain, never squeeze out (!), possibly mix with a few drops of rose oil (because of the rancid smell) and lightly massage your forehead and temples with it before going to bed. This remedy has proven itself very well.
The arum root wine against gastritis
“But also a person who has a mucous fever in the stomach, from which various kinds of chills arise, let him boil the root of the arum in pure wine, then let him cool it, then let him dip a heated steel into this wine and he warm him again and let him drink this warm.”
You should drink this arum root wine three times a day. You heat the respective amount with an immersion heater as indicated and drink it warm.
Wild garlic
“The wild garlic does not have the right warmth, but rather sharp moisture... And raw it is as harmful and poisonous to eat as the juice of useless herbs. When cooked it is healthy to eat because the fire reduces the harmful substances in it. It is good cooked for those who have chills or fever or gout. But to those who have stomach problems, it causes pain both raw and cooked, because it is moist."
Wild garlic, known as wild garlic, should only be cooked in dishes (as a vegetable side dish), never eaten raw! However, people with stomach problems should always avoid it because it causes them pain.
The Bachmint – a Hildegard spice
“The brook mint is warm, but a little cold, and can be eaten moderately and when eaten it does not benefit people and does not do them much harm. If his stomach is weighed down by a lot of food and drink and is therefore dull, then he often eats mint raw or cooked with meat or in soups or cooked in puree, and the dullness will disappear because it will remove the fat and warm intestines and his fat “It cools down a bit and the dampness is reduced.”
Bright mint should become a standard spice for meat dishes and soups for fat people with digestive problems. It promotes digestion and metabolism.
The mugwort
“The mugwort is very warm, and its juice very useful, and when boiled and eaten in puree, it heals sick intestines and warms the sick stomach. But if anyone eats and drinks and suffers pain as a result, let him cook the mugwort with meat or with fat or in puree or in some other seasoning and mixture and eat it, and this putrefaction which the sick person has contracted through previous food and drink , he takes away and drives them away.
Mugwort, which you can buy everywhere as a spice and which grows in many places in fields and fields, is the ideal seasoning for meat. It is beneficial for those who have eaten too much, for dietary errors and for cold stomachs (gastritis, etc.), as it eliminates pain and cleanses the stomach.
The betonica herb
“... And anyone who is usually plagued by false dreams should have betonika herb with them when they go to sleep in the evening.”
Putting the betonika herb in a linen pillowcase and taking it to bed with you has proven to be effective for difficult dreams (nightmares).
The bibernella mixed powder
“...cumin, a third of pepper and a quarter of bibernelle put together and finely powdered, it should be sprinkled on bread and eaten. It clears out the wrong warm and cold juices in its intestines that make people vomit.”
The remedy quickly helps with vomiting during pregnancy. However, it is also an important remedy if the urge to vomit comes from diseased kidneys, for example.
The beans as medicine
“The bean is warm...the bean flour is good and useful for the sick and the healthy person because it is light and can be digested effortlessly.”
In addition to spelled, beans have a high vegetable protein content, are satiating for a long time, are easy to digest and contain no cholesterol.
Bean salad with spelled grains
Cooking recipe:
Dress soft-boiled beans and cooked spelled grains with a salad dressing made from vinegar, sunflower oil, a little galangal and Bertram, sugar, salt, savory, crushed garlic cloves and steamed onion rings. Serve sprinkled with fresh parsley. A high-quality, protein-rich dish!
The nettle as “spring cleaning”
...when it sprouts fresh on the earth, when cooked it is useful for man's food, because it cleanses the stomach and removes the mucus from it...
The nettle oil against forgetfulness
“A person who is forgetful against his will should take a nettle, pound it into a pulp and add a little olive oil. When he goes to sleep, he should rub it on his chest and temples and do this often, and the forgetfulness in him will decrease...
This remedy works quickly for those people who don't want to be forgetful yet. If the person is already dull or senile, it no longer works.
Fever remedy – watercress
“Watercress is of a warm nature, and when eaten it does not do much good or harm to people. But whoever has jaundice or fever, let him steam watercress in a bowl and eat it often warm, and it will cure him. And whoever can hardly digest the food he has eaten should also steam watercress in a bowl, because its powers come from the water, and so he will eat it and it will help him."
The boxwood
“And a man who has rashes... on his body, let him crush the bark and the leaves of it, and squeeze out their juice, and add to it a little less licorice, and let him warm it in a wine. And he should often drink it warm, and it drives away the pain and poison of the rash from the body, so that it does not penetrate into the body. And let him immediately mix some tree oil with the aforesaid sap of this tree, dip a feather into it, and with it he gently anoint himself around the rash and around its crust. And let him do this often, and he will be healed.
The leaves and bark of the boxwood are an important means of supporting treatment for all skin rashes such as allergies. Neurodermatitis etc.
Application: Heat 1 ml of boxwood juice with ½ teaspoon of licorice powder in ¼ of wine and drink it several times a day and mix 1ml of boxwood juice with 10 ml of olive oil and often lightly rub the affected areas with it using a feather.
The spelled
Spelt food in general lowers cholesterol levels in the blood
Diabetics can save significantly on insulin (always in consultation with the doctor) when eating spelled grains.
Spelled bran has proven to be ideal for high cholesterol levels and for diabetics
Spelled grains are more likely to be laxative, while spelled flour tends to be more constipating.
Spelt gruel soup for diarrhoea sufferers and those recently operated on (never give oat gruel soup).
Spelled grains help prevent gallstones
Spelt quickly creates a feeling of satiety that lasts for a long time.
Spelled coffee promotes good digestion and is easily laxative.
Spelt beer is a strengthening drink that can be compared to wheat beer in terms of taste.
The spelled fur offers an excellent filling for pillows, blankets, mattresses, etc. to improve blood circulation. It helps, for example, with tension, pain and sleep problems.
“Spelt is the best grain, and it is warm and fat and strong, and it is milder than other grains, and it produces good flesh and blood for those who eat it, and it gives joy and joy in the human mind. And however (people) eat it, whether in bread or in other foods, it is good and mild. And if one is so sick that he cannot eat because of illness, then take the whole grains of spelled and boil them in water, adding fat or egg yolks, so that one can eat them with pleasure because of the better taste, and give that to the sick person, and it heals him internally like a good and healthy ointment.
Spelt is the ancient grain and, according to Hildegard, the remedy in general. Spelled should be the basis of every diet. It is available as pasta, flakes (instead of oat flakes), kernotto (spelled rice), spelled coffee or as a whole grain. Flour or meal and as spelled beer.
The healing power of spelled
... he strengthens... he prepares right flesh and right blood and he makes a happy sense...
Spelled helps with fatigue, loss of performance, heart and circulatory weakness, angina pectoris, allergies, disturbed cold metabolism, susceptibility to infections, liver and kidney diseases, to name just a few. It has a “warming” effect, i.e. promotes blood circulation, is “fattening”, i.e. helps to improve nerve metabolism, is “high quality” due to its content of essential amino acids, “brings good digestion” and better muscle meat, “forms good blood” and is an excellent mood-enhancing, natural psychotropic drug.
The Dittany
“...For the stone grows naturally in man. When it begins to grow in this way, the patient powders dittany and often eats this powder with wheat bread, and it prevents the stone from growing. And the man in whom the stone grew, let him put the diptam powder in vinegar mixed with honey, and let him drink this often sober, and the stone in him will be broken..."
Lipid metabolism disorders are often the reason why bladder stones grow. If you notice semolina or small stones in your urine, eat diptam powder on wheat bread several times a day (approx. 3 x 1 teaspoon). For larger stones that are already causing trouble, you should mix the powder in slightly diluted wine vinegar with honey, drink it on an empty stomach, and the stone will dissolve.
The Eberwurz (Byverwurtz) – a universal remedy
“The Eberwurz is warm and a little cold. Therefore, pulverize the root and leaves of the boar root and as much as half of it weighs, add as much Bertram powder and as much cinnamon powder to the patient and mix it. And the powder thus mixed, take daily either with bread, or with warm wine, or eat it in soups, or drink it in warm wine, and you will have no great or long illness until this death. And no man should avoid this powder prepared in this way, because if he is healthy and eats this powder every day, he will not lie sick in bed for long. And whoever is sick and eats it will recover.”
A very promising remedy. Also a remedy that includes body and soul, as well as the spices cinnamon (=strengthening, mood-enhancing) and Bertram (=cleansing, building up).
Yew wood for hay fever and asthma
“For if anyone has an infirmity in his nose and in his chest from foul humors, let him take the smoke of this wood into his nose and into his mouth, and so those foul humors will be gently and pleasantly dissolved and disappear without Danger to his body.”
Burn yew wood and inhale the smoke or heat yew wood chips in a clay bowl on the stove until they smoke. This treatment should be carried out once a day for a few weeks.
The fern bath for gout, rheumatism, arthritis or arthrosis
“...For whoever suffers from gout, let him take a fern when it is green, and let him boil it in water, and bathe often in this water; the gout will go away.”
The fern as a natural lightning rod
... and in the place where it grows, hail, lightning and thunder rarely fall on the house and the place...
It was already known in earlier times that the fern was a type of natural lightning rod. That's why it makes sense to have ferns both around the house and in the apartment.
The Sivesan powder (fennel powder)
“... And this powder preserves health for the one who is healthy, and it strengthens the sick and gives digestion to the person. It gives you strength and a beautiful and good complexion. It benefits every person, be they healthy or sick, if they take it after eating."
Sivesan powder – a universal remedy for everyone who wants to get and stay healthy! It particularly helps with poor circulation, sensitivity to the weather and has proven to be excellent for people with general weakness. It is also often given to children to combat loss of appetite and weight loss.
Application: Add 1 dose to ½ glass of warm wine and drink after lunch. For children, ½ a pinch on 1 tbsp. warm wine.
The Galangal
... and whoever has heartache and whoever is weak in heart, let him soon eat enough galangal and he will feel better..."
This versatile spice is one of Hildegard's most important remedies. It is used for dizziness, weakness, angina pectoris attacks, as a remedy for viral diseases, gastrointestinal cramps, circulatory problems and states of exhaustion.
"The galangal is warm and has no cold in it and is medicinal..."
Recipe: Galangal sauce (with vegetables, fennel, chicken or spelled risotto)
A light basic sauce made from 1 tbsp. butter, 2 tbsp. Spelled flour, ½ l water, chicken or vegetable stock, 1 small bay leaf, ½ onion, 1 small clove of garlic, salt, nutmeg, 1 teaspoon. Mix in galangal, with cream, crème fraîche and possibly an egg yolk that you don't have in the oven Whisk together more boiling sauce, refine.
Fever reliever – galangal water
A person who has a hot fever within him, powder galangal and drink this powder in spring water, and he will quench the hot fever.
This remedy is ideal for children. Since galangal has, among other things, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effects, this remedy can be used for all fever conditions. To do this, dissolve 1-2 galangal tablets in boiled tap water (for children you can also add raspberry syrup) and drink this in sips.
The barley
“...is cold, that it is colder and weaker than wheat, oats and rye. And if it is eaten as bread or flour, it is harmful to both the healthy and the sick, because it does not have such powers as other types of crops. But the sick man, whose whole body is already exhausted, let him boil the barley strongly in water and let him pour that water into a barrel and take a bath in it, and he will do this often until he is healed and the flesh regains its body and healed..."
Recipe: Barley bath - for body weakness after a serious illness, feeling of weakness, muscle wasting and anorexia, boil 10 kg of whole barley grains in 50-80 liters of water for approx. 15 minutes. Bathe in barley water (37-40°C) for 15-20 minutes two to three times a week and then rest for at least two hours. This is done until the patient feels healthy and strong.
The barley washes for beautiful facial skin
“...But whoever has hard and rough skin on his face and is easily flaky by the wind, let him boil barley in water and then wash his face gently with that moderately warm water strained through a cloth and his skin will be like that be gentle and mild and will have a beautiful color..."
Hawkweed mixture for heart and circulatory weakness
“The hawkweed is cold and when eaten it strengthens the heart and reduces the evil humors which are accumulated in one place in man. But the person who eats it should not eat it alone and plainly, because it is too tart, and let him add a little diptam, or a little galangal, or a little zither, and let him eat it, as was said before."
Since this remedy strengthens the heart and at the same time reduces accumulated "improper fluids", it can be used wherever these congestions are found in connection with weak heart activity, such as poor circulation and circulatory disorders - so it is a suitable summer remedy. This powder can be sprinkled on bread for consumption.
The oats
“...it gives them a happy mind and a pure and clear mind, and it gives them a good color and healthy flesh... but for those who are very sick and cold, it is not good to eat because the oats are always Looking for warmth..."
The hornbeam shavings against birthmarks and port-wine stains
“And if anyone has bad spots on his body, cut a chip of the wood under the bark and warm it by the fire, and lay it warm on the marks, that is, the spots, and they will disappear.”
Heat these hornbeam chips on the stove or grill and fix them on the stains with a bandage.
Hemp as a remedy and as a dressing material
“The hemp is warm, and when the air is neither very warm nor very cold, it grows, and so is its nature, and its seed contains healing power, and it is healing for healthy people to eat, and it is in their stomachs light and useful, so that it removes to some extent the mucus from the stomach, and it is easily digested, and it diminishes the bad humors, and makes the good humors strong...A cloth made of hemp is good for dressing the ulcers and wounds , because the heat in it is moderate..."
You should use hemp cloths as bandages because the warmth of the hemp helps heal wounds.
The houseleek against male infertility
“... And if a man is dry in his semen, so that he lacks the semen without being an old man, he should pickle houseleek in goat's milk until the houseleek is completely soaked with that milk, and then he should He cooks them in this milk with the addition of a few eggs so that it can be a dish. And so he shall eat it for three or five days, and his seed will regain the power of procreation, and he will have children..."
This preparation only helps with male infertility, but not with female infertility.
The deer tongue powder for severe pain
“... And gently dry deer tongue again in the hot sun or on a warm brick, and powder it often and lick this powder often from your hand on an empty stomach and after eating, and it takes away the pain in the head and in the Chest and dulls other pains that are in your body. But also a person who becomes violently and suddenly weak because of some pain should immediately drink this powder in warm wine."
The deer tongue elixir for the liver and lungs
“Deer tongue is warm and helps the liver and the lungs and the aching intestines…. and make such a clear potion and drink it often after eating and on an empty stomach, and it benefits the liver and cleanses the lungs and heals the aching intestines and takes away the internal putrefaction and phlegm."
If the cough doesn't go away despite many treatments, the liver is often to blame. With the deer tongue elixir we have the right remedy here. For the first few days you only drink a liqueur glass full after every meal, then for 6-8 weeks you drink a liqueur glass full 3 times a day before and after meals and the liver and lungs heal.
The millet
“... millet is not suitable for eating, because it neither increases the blood nor the flesh in man, nor gives him strength, but only fills the stomach and only reduces hunger, because it does not have the taste of refreshment.. .”
According to Hildegard, millet is not suitable for human nutrition, but rather for satiety.
The honey
“...a person who is fat and who often eats honey gets phlegm and emaciation from it. But if a thin and thin person eats boiled honey, he will not be much harmed by it. The boiled honey, if it is very well skimmed, does not do much harm to the fat or the lean, the healthy or the sick. But if someone eats the honeycomb with the wax, it arouses the melancholy in him...
For Hildegard, honey is an important means of producing various remedies. Under no circumstances should it be used as a sugar substitute, as, according to Hildegard, it does not promote health and can even be harmful. It is better to use raw cane sugar (succanat) for sweetening.
The hops
“The hops are warm and dry, and they have some moisture in them, and they are not very useful for the benefit of man, because he causes the melancholy in man to increase, and he makes man's mind sad and weighs him down his intestines. However, with its bitterness, it keeps certain rots away from the drinks to which it is added, making them all the more durable."
According to Hildegard, hops are only useful for the longevity of the beer, because they make people sad and melancholy. Therefore, depressed people should prefer a glass of wine and those who would rather stick to beer should always think about the right moderation.
The ginger
... If someone's body is thin... take this powder... it harms a healthy and obese person because it makes them unfocused, forgetful and clumsy..."
Ginger is seen as a remedy for thinness, emaciation and loss of appetite. Here you should eat it in soups on an empty stomach or on bread. However, once you have strengthened, you should avoid ginger.
The ginger drainage cookies
“If a person wants to make and take a purgative, he should take ginger, half of it licorice and a third of ginger citwer. He pulverizes this and sieves it finely..."
The ginger drainage cookies are available as a finished product. Take 1 piece of biscuit in the morning on an empty stomach, before getting up, i.e. while still in bed, and let it slowly melt in your mouth. The cookies cause a mild elimination via the liver, intestines and kidneys, stimulate metabolism and remove toxins and carcinogenic putrefactive substances from the stomach and intestines. For those who have planned their fasting cure in spring, we highly recommend the ginger purification cookies to help!
The ginger mixed powder for stomach pain and upper abdominal pain
“...In the same way, a person suffering from any pain in the stomach should powder ginger and twice as much galangal and half as much citver. And after eating he pours this powder into wine, and so he often drinks it, even in the evening when he goes to sleep."
St John's wort
“St. John's wort is cold and suitable for livestock in the pasture. However, it is not of much use for medicine because it is an overgrown and neglected herb.”
The much praised St. John's wort is not used by Hildegard for medicinal purposes or for the production of remedies. It is an herb that is only useful for pasture animals - cows, sheep, goats.
The chervil
“... The chervil is of a dry nature...And it is somewhat like the useless herbs...For neither cooked nor raw it is fit for the human body to eat, unless it is very useful for medicine is..."
The enjoyment of cherries
“If someone eats cherries, he should immediately drink enough wine so that their juice is suppressed by the wine and he himself is not harmed by this juice.”
Refine your cherry jam with a little wine!
Recipe: Cherry jam with wine bottles
Cook 500g sour cherries and 250g raspberries with 750g preserving sugar, 2-3 cloves and ½ teaspoon cinnamon until set (approx. 4 minutes), add 6 tbsp. Add strong, not too bitter red wine, bring to the boil again and pour hot into glasses.
The vinegar cherry stones against intestinal worms
“...If someone has worms in his stomach, let him put cherry stones in vinegar and eat them often before eating and the worms will die out in him...”
You put cherry stones in wine vinegar and eat about 3-5 pieces a day over a longer period of time.
The Kubebe (The Cubeb Pepper)
"The kubebe is warm, ... it also makes the spirit cheerful, intellect and knowledge pure, because the useful and temperate warmth of the kubebe extinguishes the unseemly embers of desire in which stinking and muddy liquids are hidden..."
The Pumpkin
“The pumpkins are dry and cold and grow from the air. And they are good for sick and healthy people to eat.”
Cooking recipe: pumpkin soup
400 g pumpkin, 200 g carrots, 1 onion, 2 tbsp. butter, curry powder, 2 tbsp. fine wholemeal spelled flour, 1 l Hildegard vegetable broth, Galant, salt, Bertram, 1 tbsp. Almond flakes, 3-4 tbsp. Créme fraîche.
Heat the butter and sauté the finely chopped onions in it until translucent. Add the vegetables cut into small cubes and fry lightly. Add the curry and wholemeal spelled flour and sauté. Pour in the cold vegetable broth. Add Galant and Bertram and bring to the boil while stirring, then let the soup simmer on a low heat for about 10 minutes and then puree. Season again with salt and galant. Lightly brown the almond flakes without adding any fat. Pour créme fraîche on top of the soup and sprinkle the flaked almonds over it.
The Coltsfoot mixed powder
“...but take aloe and myrrh in equal weight and a little less of camphor than one of these two and melt this in a bowl and add a little wild Coltsfoot. And then make cakes out of it with breadcrumbs. Dry them either on a stone heated by fire or in the sun and when dried, grind them like powder. And often drink a little of this powder in warm honeyroot when you are fasting. And if you are healthy and strong, you will miraculously become even healthier and stronger, and your powers will be put in order in this way. And when you are sick, it miraculously lifts you up and strengthens you, like the sun brightens the dull day."
Here we have a valuable universal remedy, a strengthening and strengthening agent for the healthy and the sick. You add a pinch of this mixed lettuce powder to honey tea and drink it warm. The application should be made over a longer period of 2-3 months.
The linseed
“...The flax is warm and not suitable for eating. But whoever has pain in his side, let him boil linseeds in water, let him dip a linen cloth in that warm water, and without those seeds he often lay the cloth on his side and that pain, although it is severe, is somewhat alleviated and subsides...And whoever has been burned by fire anywhere on his body, let him boil linseed strongly in water, and let him dip a linen cloth in the water and lay it warm on the place where he was burned, and it will draw out the burn."
Hildegard only recommends linseed for external use, under no circumstances for internal use. It is an excellent remedy for burns, sunburn and skin damage: the pain subsides very quickly and no or only very inconspicuous scars remain:
Boil whole linseed grains (approx. 3 tablespoons in 1 liter of water) for 10 minutes and strain. Soak a freshly ironed (germ-free) linen cloth (it has to be real linen!) with the warm (approx. 40°) linseed water and place it on the burned area.
The Lindenspanring
“But take away from the trunk, but not from the branches of this tree, the bark until it reaches the white wood when it greens up in summer, and then cut chips from the wood and put them in a pierced golden ring....And wear that ring always on your finger, so that the heat of your finger rises to that chip and the force of that chip rises to that chip on your finger and the force of that chip touches your finger and its veins, and this (is) a very strong force against the most dangerous human diseases and keeps them away from people..."
With this ring, Hildegard gives us an extraordinary remedy against the most serious and dangerous diseases and epidemics.
The linden root wood powder for heart pain
“The linden tree has great warmth, and that warmth is entirely in the root, and it rises into the branches and into the leaves.... And the person who has heartache, take the inner root, and that, whatever is in the middle of the linden root, and let him powder it, and often eat that powder with bread, and his heart will be better."
Since the greatest power of the linden tree is found in the root area, the “heart” of it is taken to obtain the powder for heart problems. Since it is not entirely clear from the text which heart diseases it is to be used for, it is recommended (after consultation with the treating doctor) to always take the powder, sprinkled on bread, to support cardiac therapy.
The laurel oil for heart pain
“If you have pain in your heart, anoint yourself with it there, or if you have pain on your side or back, anoint yourself with it there, and you will feel better.”
Heart pain can also occur if the back is tense.
Almond oil – a high-quality oil
“The almond tree is very warm and has some moisture in it. And its bark, leaves and juice are of little use as medicine, because all its power lies in the fruit. But he who has an empty brain and a face of bad color, and therefore has a headache, often eat the inner seeds of this fruit and it fills the brain and gives it the right color. But anyone who has lung disease and liver damage should often eat these seeds, whether raw or cooked, and they give and bring strength to the lungs because they do not make a person dull or dry in any way, but rather they make him strong."
We see that, according to Hildegard, both almond kernels and the expensive almond oil are 100% healthy. They strengthen the brain and nerves, improve skin color, strengthen the lungs and liver and are therefore also an excellent health aid for asthmatics.
The mulberry wine
“If someone suffers from the liver, he should drink mulberry wine often, because the suffering often arises from an overflow of blood (in the liver). Since the mulberry juice is, as it were, blood, it calms this down again..."
Fever remedy – the Masterwort wine
“The master root is warm and good for fever. For whoever has a fever, whatever it may be, should take masterwort and crush it only moderately, and when it is thus crushed or ground, let him pour half a cup of wine over this masterwort, up to the top pieces, and let him do so with this one Let him stand with wine overnight, and in the morning he will add wine again, and then he will drink it on an empty stomach, for three or five days, and he will be healed."
Pour wine over a few root pieces of master root overnight and leave them covered. Add some fresh wine in the morning and then drink it in sips throughout the day. Start again in the evening. This remedy works promptly even with high fever.
The lemon balm
The lemon balm is warm and a person who eats it loves to laugh because its warmth touches the spleen and therefore the heart is glad...
So don't just make tea from the lemon balm leaves, use them as a spice or simply eat the leaves raw. Here we have another typical psychotropic drug from Hildegard.
The feverfew
“... And whoever has pain in the intestines, let him boil feverfew with water and fat or oil, and he add the finest flour to it, and so he prepares the soup and eats it, and he heals the intestines."
Recipe: Feverfew Soup
Cut 4-5 feverfew leaves (or use some undiluted fresh feverfew plant juice), bring to the boil briefly in ¼ liter of water and a little (sunflower) oil. Then mix 2-3 tablespoons. Spelled flour in a little cold water and use it to make a soup over a low heat. It is seasoned with a little salt, nutmeg and Bertram. Feverfew soup is an effective help for many women's diseases, especially period pain.
The feverfew ointment
“But a man suffering from sharp pains, let him mix feverfew juice with cow butter, and anoint himself where it hurts, and he will be healed.”
The feverfew ointment has proven itself effective for intestinal colic, premenstrual pain, adnexal pain and cramps.
Mother cumin
“However, it is good for the healthy person to eat because it gives them good intelligence and brings mild warmth to those who are too warm. But it harms everyone who is sick if he eats it, because it causes the disease to flare up in him, except the one who suffers pain in the lungs. A person who wants to eat boiled or fried cheese, sprinkle cumin on it so that he does not suffer pain from it, and so he eats it."
Since cheese in particular causes nausea, stomach pain or even severe bloating in many people, you should sprinkle mother cumin on the cheese to improve digestion. However, be careful with sick people, especially those with heart disease; For these, mother caraway is extremely harmful because it only promotes the disease.
The clove
“...if someone has a headache so that his head is buzzing as if he were deaf, he often eats cloves, and this reduces the buzzing that is in his head... Therefore, if the dropsy is already in As people begin to grow, they often eat cloves, and they suppress the disease because their strength passes into that person's intestines...But also the warmth of the person's marrow sweats repeatedly and causes foot gout in him...when that person If you often eat cloves, their power goes into the marrow of that person and prevents foot gout from growing..."
Chewing 3-4 cloves a day has been shown to be effective for renal dropsy (renal sclerosis), but especially for so-called gout, which occurs particularly often in dialysis patients. People who often have headaches due to high blood pressure should also eat this spice every day.
Olive oil as a medicine
“... The olive tree is more warm than cold, and it signifies mercy... But the oil from the fruit of this tree is not good for food, because when eaten it causes nausea and makes other foods bad makes it edible. But it is useful for many remedies..."
According to Hildegard, olive oil is not only suitable as a cooking oil for the production of medicinal products. Many people, especially children, get diarrhea or severe nausea from drinking olive oil.
The olive oil for cramps
“If a cramp bothers a person anywhere on his body, he should take olive oil and rub it firmly on the area where it hurts or, if he does not have olive oil available, with some other valuable ointment ...“
Mixing olive oil with a few drops of rose oil has proven particularly effective for infants and small children who are plagued by stomach cramps. It is best to rub it vigorously into the entire abdominal area.
The parsley
“Parsley is of a vigorous nature and has more heat than cold in it, and it grows on wind and moisture. And it is better and more useful for humans to eat raw than cooked.”
So only sprinkle raw parsley over the finished dish or use it to decorate and eat raw. Exceptions are remedies where cooking the parsley is expressly required.
The pepper
"The pepper is very warm and dry and has a certain corruption in it and, when eaten in large quantities, harms a person and causes pleurisy in him, and it releases the juices in him and prepares evil juices in him."
Since pepper disrupts the juices, which in turn increases various juice diseases (e.g. gout, rheumatism), it is better to season with herbs or galangal.
The pennywort mixture
“... He shall drink this wine on an empty stomach for nine days, but only a little after breakfast, and with the same wine he shall prepare and eat a rich ice soup. When he goes to sleep, he should warm the wine with a hot steel and then drink it, covering himself with a warm blanket so that he sweats. He should do this until he is healed.”
This recipe is recommended for any form of jaundice, but due to the severity of the disease, always consult a doctor.
Recipe:
Put 60g of pennywort mixture in 1 liter of good dry wine and keep it dark for a few days, then drink some of it before and after meals for 9 days. In the evening, drink some wine (1 liqueur glass) heated with an immersion heater and sweat in bed.
The plum stone cure
“...But whoever has a dry cough, let him take the inner seeds of this fruit, and after the husk is thrown away, let him put them in the wine, and let them be poured over with wine until they swell quite a bit, and so on "Let him eat it often and then he should also prepare a soup with good wine and take it while sipping it, and he will be quickly healed."
Application: For severe coughs (whooping cough, persistent cough after flu, dry cough, severe dry cough) place approx. 40 plum seeds (the inner white core!) in a large cup of wine for at least 24 hours, cover until they are “pot-bellied”. are swollen. Chew and eat three to six seeds for 3 days to 1 week (the wine neutralizes most of the prussic acid), and also chop six plum seeds into small pieces and mix them with a little spelled flour or semolina and 3 tablespoons. Cook a thin soup with wine in which the seeds have soaked.
The Polei vinegar honey against stomach mucus, gastritis, stomach and intestinal fungi
"And powder Polei, and pour this powder into vinegar and honey in equal weight, drinking it often on an empty stomach... and it cleanses your stomach and brightens your eyes..."
Take 1 tablespoon of this Polei vinegar honey before each meal. Full over several weeks. This treatment has proven particularly effective for people with frequent stomach problems.
The Polei mint for stomach pain, gastritis, and fungal diseases
“... The Polei has a pleasant warmth and is still moist, and it has the power of the following fifteen herbs, namely citver, clove, galant, ginger, basil, comfrey, lungwort, Easter luzei, yarrow, boar's rue, angel's sweet , Agrimony, Stubborn, Cranesbill, Brookmint. And these herbs counteract all fevers... But if you eat the leaves of the Polei raw, often with salt, namely if you add them alone to the meat, they will warm your stomach if you have a cold stomach. And even if his stomach is full of poison, which is pus, it cleanses and heals him."
You take fresh Polei mint leaves or Polei herb powder and eat it with salt on bread.
The rose oil
“...But the rose is also good for potions and ointments and for all medicines...and they are all the better if some of the rose is added to them...”
So add some rose oil to all homemade ointments!
The healing ointment made from roses
“...the rose is taken and half of it is sage, with the addition of fresh fat that has been melted. And this shall be boiled in water at the same time, that it may become an ointment, and where the man is afflicted with spasm or paralysis, there he shall be anointed with the ointment, and he shall be better..."
The yarrow – its internal use
“But whoever receives a wound inside the body, whether he was wounded with a spear or was tied up inside, let him powder this yarrow and let him drink that powder in warm water. And when he feels better, let him take this powder in warm wine until he is cured."
For internal bleeding, internal injuries and after operations, yarrow powder is first added to warm water to drink. As soon as the patient feels a little better and no longer has a fever, they are given yarrow powder in warm wine. It has also proven to be effective before operations. Drink yarrow in wine because it helps wounds heal better. Complications such as thrombosis, secondary bleeding, etc. are also reduced because the ingredients of yarrow have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antispasmodic effects.
The blackthorn ash elixir for paralysis
“And a person who is sick with gout... and so that his limbs are lame, let him... drink moderately on an empty stomach, but take enough of it after eating. And he will do this often and the gout will go away from him...and he will regain the health of his limbs, because this drink is better than gold."
The iris as a beauty product
“And whoever has hard skin on his face like bark, or whoever has bumps there, or whoever has a bad color, let him squeeze out the juice of their leaves and pour it into a vessel with the water of great rivers...and let it warm a little at the same time. And so he washes his face with this water and this moderately warmed juice, and this he does often, and it makes the skin pleasant and a good beautiful color on the face."
Here we have the ideal beauty water. Add the juice from iris leaves to distilled water and warm it up slightly. You wash your face and possibly your body with this warmed iris water. Pale, wilted and wrinkled skin looks more radiant.
The iris ointment
“The iris is warm and dry and all its strength lies in the roots and its green power rises into the leaves. In May, however, take the juice of its leaves and make fat liquid in a key and add this juice and prepare an ointment so that it appears green. And he who has the little scabies, anoint him often with this ointment and he will be cured."
This ointment is an excellent help for minor skin problems. It has proven particularly useful for children with rashes, redness, etc. Since this ointment is specifically intended to be made in May, it is best to use May butter from cows as fat. This butter can go rancid quickly, so you should divide the ointment into small portions, keep some in the refrigerator and freeze the rest.
Recipe: Allow the butter to soften and add the juice from squeezed iris leaves until the ointment turns a really deep green.
Siser oil for sick facial skin
“And whoever has sore skin on his face that it cracks easily, let him take Gerla and pound it in a mortar, and when it is pounded, let him add oil. And so he anoints his face in the evening when he goes to bed and he does this until he gets well."
The oil takes its name from the Latin word “Sium sisorum”; This is the garden rapunzel, also called Gerla or sugar root. It is applied primarily at night to cracked, brittle facial skin, and you will notice a significant improvement after a short time.
The saxifrage
“The saxifrage is cold and has strong powers within it, and it is of no use for eating by a person with a delicate body, because it would be too strong for his body. But when mucus accumulates in the stomach or in the bladder or somewhere in the body of a person and hardens like a stone, then crush the saxifrage seed in water and drink it often after eating and not on an empty stomach, and it breaks up Drink what is hard and reluctant in a person like a stone, and that person will be healed..."
Here we find a first-class stone remedy. Regardless of whether the stone is in the bladder or in the bile, add a pinch of saxifrage seeds to a glass of water and drink this after every meal and the stone will be dissolved. Since this plant is very rare, it is recommended to grow saxifrage in the garden.
The licorice root
“...is of moderate warmth and prepares a clear voice for man...makes his mind mild and brightens his eyes and softens his stomach for digestion...”
The licorice root has an effect on the mind, clears the eyes and helps with good digestion (also as tea or licorice).
The fir ointment
“But if anyone has pain in the stomach or in the spleen, then anoint his heart with this ointment for weakness of the heart, then (anoint him) over the stomach if he has pain in the stomach, or over the spleen if he has pain there, and the ointment will penetrate the entire skin with its power, so that he will be healed quickly."
The fir ointment is especially recommended for hypotensive people
The violet fat
“Even a person who has heaviness in the head or in the kidneys, or who is plagued by paralysis somewhere, squeeze violet juice through a cloth and add enough suet and old fat to half the suet. And at the same time let him melt this in a bowl and make an ointment and anoint himself with it on his head and other places where it hurts, and he will feel better."
This violet fat should not be confused with violet ointment (which is not made with fat, but with olive oil.)
Applications: Frequently used with violet fat, i.e. H. Rub the kidneys daily to stimulate them; but also for headaches (let violet fat absorb as a pack for 1 hour) or for rheumatic pain and paralysis.
The violet ointment
“Take violet juice and a third part of this juice olive oil and, according to the amount of violet juice, goat suet...the part of the body where crabs eat people, anoint it all around and over it...But also rub other ulcers with the ointment where the person has to suffer. And if anyone suffers from the head, anoint him across his forehead with it.”
The violet ointment is excellent for breast cancer, as a scar ointment, for severe headaches and herpes.
The juniper steam bath
“But also take its green branches and boil them in water, and make a steam bath with this water.”
You make a decoction from a few juniper branches by boiling them in water for about 10-20 minutes and then straining it. You can make a sauna infusion from this. This remedy is effective against fever, especially allergic skin rashes and their side effects.
The wine and vinegar for bladder weakness and bedwetting
“If someone cannot hold his urine because of the cold of his stomach, he should often drink wine warmed by the fire. And he mixes all his dishes with vinegar, and he drinks the vinegar, whatever he can, often."
If you have bladder weakness caused by a cold stomach, you should often drink warm wine and add vinegar to all kinds of food. Drinking a glass of (wine) vinegar water every day also works wonders here.
The vine drops against incipient vision damage
“The vine has fiery warmth. If anyone has cloudy eyes, let him apply the drops that flow from the vine when the shoot is cut off to his eyelids and let some enter the eye. And he does that often, and that makes the eyes clear without a doubt.”
The eyelids are often moistened with these vine drops and 1 drop is instilled into the eye twice a day. Afterwards the eyes become clearer.
The oily vine drops for earache
“...If the shoot is first cut off from the vine, the drops that then flow from that cut from morning to noon are good and useful...Therefore a person should collect them in a droplet and add olive oil to them . And if he has an earache or a headache, he should anoint himself with it and he will be better."
These drops usually work quickly for ear pain, but especially for children with middle ear infections and/or suppurations. You shake the bottle briefly and then rub the drops well around the painful ear. Attention: Do not allow any of these drops to get into your ear!
The wormwood juice mixed with wine for severe headaches
“The wormwood is very warm and very strong and is the most important champion against all exhaustion. For pour some of its juice into warm wine, and moisten the man's head, when it hurts, all the way to the eyes, and to the ears, and to the nape of the neck; and this you shall do in the evening when you go to sleep, and cover it whole head with a woolen hat until the morning and it suppresses the pain of the swollen head and the pain that "bursts" in the head from the gout, and it also drives away the internal headache."
You rub this wormwood-wine mixture on your forehead, temples, ears and neck before going to bed and wear a woolen hat over it at night.
The cinnamon
“The cinnamon is also very warm and has strong powers and moderate moisture in it; but its heat (is) so strong that it suppresses that moisture, and whoever eats it often, it reduces the bad juices and prepares good juices in him..."
Cooking recipe: cinnamon leaves
Make a shortcrust pastry from 500 g fine spelled flour, 250 g butter, 250 g powdered sugar, 2 eggs, 1 yolk, zest of half a lemon, 250 g almonds, 1 pinch of salt and 1 teaspoon each of vanilla sugar and cinnamon and leave it in for a short time Let the refrigerator rest. Roll out the dough to a thickness of approx. 5 mm and cut out leaf-shaped cookies. Use a knife to score a leaf structure into the surface of the cookies. Bake at 200° for about 10 minutes (until the wheels are light brown). Remove and let cool. Dip half of the cookies in chocolate and let dry on baking paper.
Blackcurrant juice tastes delicious with a pinch of cinnamon or fennel tea, lightly mixed with apple juice and seasoned with a pinch of cinnamon!
The cypress bath for poor circulation
“But whoever is weak, or even weak in body, let him boil branches and leaves in water, and let him take a bath in this water, and take it often, and he will be healed and regain his strength. ..”
So be sure to bring cypress branches with you on your next vacation to the south. Boil these in water for a good 20-30 minutes and add the decoction to the bath water. This is an excellent strengthening bath, both for general body weakness - circulatory system - and for recovery after illness. It stimulates blood circulation strongly.
Other
The Rose – The Lily – The Sage
“...and whoever is hot-tempered, let him take the rose and a little sage and grind it into powder. And in that hour, when anger arises in him, he shall hold it to his nose. For the sage comforts, the rose delights...The scent of the lily also delights the human heart and gives him the right thoughts..."
Mix your own fragrance oil from rose oil, lily oil and sage oil and delight your heart and soul.
The garlic and onions
“...Garlic is more beneficial to eat for healthy and sick people than leeks. And it must be eaten raw...because its juice is temperate and has the right warmth. It should be eaten moderately so that the blood in people does not become excessively warm..."
“The onion does not have the right warmth, but rather sharp moisture...When eaten raw, it is harmful and poisonous, like the juice of useless herbs. When cooked, however, it is healthy to eat because the fire reduces the harmful effects in it... But for those who have stomach problems, it causes pain both raw and cooked...
Garlic raw or cooked lowers cholesterol levels and is good against arteriosclerosis. Onions, on the other hand, may only be consumed boiled or fried and should generally be avoided by those with weak stomachs!
The clary sage elixir against inflammation of the gastric mucosa
“... And whoever's stomach is so weak that it is easily purulent from food, let him take clary sage and a third part of it polei and of fennel as much as a third part of polei, and at the same time he cook this in good wine , with the addition of a little honey, and he strains it through a cloth, and often drinks it after meals and towards night; his stomach will be pleasantly cured or cleansed.”
Eating meat
The pork
“...and it is not good to eat for healthy or sick people, because it does not reduce phlegm or other weaknesses in a person, but increases it, because its heat adds to the warmth of a person, and (this) excites a person storms in his manners and deeds, which is evil. But a man who is very sick, so that he loses weight in his body and is thin, let him eat moderately from young pigs while he is sick, so that he may gain warmth from their warmth, and after he has recovered, he should not eat more of the piggies because this would increase diseases in him..."
According to Hildegard, regular eating of pork and sausages should be eliminated from the diet. There are exceptions for physically weak and weak people, who should only eat meat from young pigs until their condition improves.
The sheep, the lamb
... is good for healthy and sick people to eat in summer, but in winter it is not suitable for eating because it is cold and because winter is also cold...
The Goat
“...and its flesh is good to eat for both healthy and sick, and when eaten often it heals the broken and bruised entrails, and it heals and strengthens the stomach of him who eats it.”
Eating certain poultry
The bouquet
“But a person who has epilepsy often eats ostrich meat and it gives him strength. But its meat is also healthy to eat for fat and strong people because it reduces their excess meat and makes them strong.”
The Chicken
“And their flesh is good for those who are healthy... but it gives a little refreshment to those who are sick. But if someone is very sick and eats this meat often, it creates mucus in his stomach and makes the stomach so sick that he can hardly digest the food he has eaten because this meat is cold..."
The Goose
“... and she feeds on pure and impure food... her flesh is not suitable for sick people to eat because it often causes mucus and ulcers in people...But people who are healthy can somehow eat the meat they eat cope with..."
Eating fish
The salmon
...and it is soft and weak, and it is not good for any man to eat, because it excites all the evil juices that are in man..."
The carp
“... and from the swamps he has soft and weak flesh in him... and his flesh does no harm to a healthy person when eaten, but it does some harm to a sick person...”
The brown trout
"... and for sick people it is not good for eating, but for healthy people it does not harm..."
The mushrooms
“The mushrooms that arise above the earth, whatever they are, are like foam and sweat of the earth, and they do some harm to the person who eats them, because they cause mucus and foam in him. And the mushrooms that grow in moist air and moist earth are neither completely warm nor completely cold, but lukewarm, and when a person eats them, they awaken a foul juice in him... But the mushrooms that grow on certain trees, standing or lying, are somewhat good for human food, like certain garden herbs, and they cause less harm to those who eat them and are sometimes even useful as medicine."
According to Hildegard, mushrooms bring a lot of rubbish and mucus from the earth into the human body and should therefore not be consumed. Only some mushrooms that grow on trees can be eaten without harm. These include, among other things: those mushrooms that grow on beech trees.
The spices
The salt
“The salt is very warm, a little moist and useful in many ways. If a person eats food without salt, he becomes weak inside (lukewarm). But if he eats it moderately tempered with salt, it strengthens and heals him. Food that is too salty makes it dry inside and damages it, because too much salt dries out the lungs because they crave moisture. The salt then spreads to the liver and injures it somewhat, even though the liver is strong and can handle the salt. That's why people should salt every dish so that the salt doesn't taste before the food."
When it comes to salting, “moderation” is again the order of the day. Hildegard shows us that consuming salt in moderation is important for the body.
The oils
The linseed oil
“...The flax is warm and not suitable for eating...”
Pumpkin seed oil
“The pumpkins are dry and cold and grow from the air. And they are good for sick and healthy people to eat.”
The safflower oil
“... But it (the thistle) harms the sick, both cooked and raw, because it causes fatigue in them.”
The nut oil
“The oil pressed from the nuts is warm and it fattens the flesh of those who eat it and makes them cheerful; but from this the mucus increases, so that it fills the human chest with secretion, i.e. H. Slime fills.”
Of these vegetable oils, pumpkin seed oil and, to a limited extent, nut oil are best suited for cooking.
The kitchen poisons
The strawberry
“... the fruits, namely the strawberries, also cause mucus in people who eat them, and they are not suitable for eating by either healthy or sick people...”
The Peach
...Eating the fruit of this tree is good neither for a healthy person nor for a sick person, because it destroys the good mixture of juices in a person and creates mucus in his stomach..."
Peaches promote mucus formation, especially in the stomach and intestines, and can therefore worsen metabolic disorders.
The leek
And when eaten raw it is as bad and destructive to man as a poisonous, useless herb, because it turns the blood and the putrefaction and the juices of man into the opposite...
The plum
“...it is harmful and dangerous to eat the fruit of this tree...as dangerous as eating a poisonous herb...”
The ivory latwergs after poisoning and environmental toxins
“And a man who has pain in the chest, or in the heart, or in the spleen, or in the stomach, or who has jaundice, let him powder nutmeg and licorice in equal weight, and let him scrape ivory bones, and let him mix twice as much this powder with the aforementioned Latwerge, and he often eats it on an empty stomach and after eating, and it will get better."
This ivory latwerge has proven to be ideal for heart, stomach and intestinal problems caused by poisoning, especially amalgam poisoning. So if you have a piece of jewelry or a figurine made of ivory, you should scrape or grate some of it finely or bring it to your Hildegard pharmacist so that he can use it for your Latwerge.
Foods that promote digestion
The spelled:
...it is milder than other types of grain..."
Spelled coffee and spelled grains in particular stimulate digestion.
The Bertram:
...it doesn't send anything out undigested, but rather provides it with good digestion...
The Bertram in every dish, but moderately, only as a spice.
The mugwort:
“...and when cooked it heals sick intestines and warms sick stomachs...”
Add some mugwort to meat dishes, soups and purees.
The Garden orache:
“...and when eaten it promotes good digestion...”
Tell me how to prepare salad.
The fennel:
“...it causes good digestion...”
Chew vegetables, tea and seeds on an empty stomach.
The deer meat:
“...If a person eats deer meat quite warm, but not hot, it cleanses his stomach and makes it whole…”
The goat meat, the lamb meat:
“... and it heals and strengthens the stomach...”
General advice
The seasoning
“...When a person eats and drinks, a conduction system in the human being directs the taste substances and the subtle substances and the fragrances thereof to the brain and promotes its warming by filling up its vascular heat...”
Hildegard's statement clearly shows that the right and harmoniously seasoned food not only tastes good, but also acts on the body like a helpful medication.
The raw food
“If a person eats raw apples, raw pears, raw vegetables or other raw foods that have not been balanced by heating or any other method of preparation, they cannot be easily digested by the gastrointestinal tract because they were not previously balanced. The bad juices of this food, which should have been intercepted or neutralized by heating or by the addition of salt or vinegar, and thus were not intercepted and removed, become attached to the spleen and change it, so that it swells and hurts..."
Hildegard warns against raw food, as this can cause poor blood circulation and lead to spleen diseases. So you should cook or simmer foods before use and pickle salads with a sauce of vinegar, salt, oil and spices, which changes the raw state of the salad.
The wine vinegar
“Vinegar comes from wine and is useful for all dishes; it is added to the dishes in such a way that it does not take away the taste, but is perceived a little. So vinegar, taken with the food, cleanses the filth in a person and reduces the juices and the food takes the right path in him."
The Habermus – the ideal breakfast after Hildegard von Bingen
...When a person is sober, he should first eat food prepared from fruit and flour... He should also first eat warm food...
Recipe:
Stir ½ cup of spelled meal/groats/flakes into 1-1 ½ cups of water and bring to the boil, stirring constantly. Add 1 teaspoon of honey, 1 teaspoon of galangal, Bertram and cinnamon and simmer for about 5 minutes (flakes) or 10 minutes (grills). Add ½ chopped apple in the last four minutes. Sprinkle with sweet chopped almonds and 1 teaspoon of psyllium seeds and drizzle with the juice of ¼ – ½ lemon.
The unreasonable fasting
“If some people abstain from eating in an excessive way, so that they do not give their body the right, appropriate strength through food, and if some people are inconsistent and careless and others are dealing with many serious illnesses, then It sometimes happens that violent unrest arises in your body because the elements in you are brought against each other..."
If you want to fast sensibly, you should do so under professional guidance, ideally in a group of like-minded people. For someone who is weakened by illness, try a spelled reduction fast (after consulting your doctor). On 3 days a week only cooked spelled is eaten in any form - semolina, flakes, meal, Kernotto etc. - possibly together with cooked vegetables or fruit. There is always a normal food day between these spelled days.
The gemstones
“... And so the gemstones are created by fire and water, therefore they also have fire and moisture in them, and they also contain many powers and many effects of works of art, so that many different types of work can be done with them, namely such Works that are good and honorable and useful to man... The other stones, which were created in different earths and different regions, and which acquire different natures and different colors from the earths in which they were created, these are good not much as a cure..."
Gemstones that are not listed as remedies by Hildegard, but have a generally positive aura and can be collected as gemstones.
“But God had adorned the first angel as if with the most precious stones, in the sight of which Lucifer saw the deity reflected and drew his wisdom from it; and in them he recognized that God wanted to work many miracles; Thereupon his mind (thought, understanding) arose - because the precious stones that adorned him sparkled in the light of God - thinking that he himself could do something similar and more than God, and therefore his splendor was extinguished. But, just as God restored Adam to a better relationship, so God did not allow either the beauty or the power of these precious gems to perish, but wanted them to be on earth for adornment, blessings and for medicine.”
The healing power of gemstones is very great and the sick person who has no hope of improving their symptoms should use the gemstones to help them recover.
The Amethyst
“...But if a person swells due to a new tumor somewhere in his body, then he moistens that stone with his saliva... and so touches the place of the tumor everywhere and that tumor will shrink and disappear... “
Here we have an extremely important remedy for cancer. This stone has already helped many people in a supportive and prompt manner. A tumor can also be a wart etc.
Application: Moisten the amethyst with your saliva, rub it over the relevant area and stick it with a plaster over the tumor for a few hours. Repeat this process at least once, preferably two or three times.
“... But a person who has spots on his face, let him moisten the amethyst with his saliva, and with the stone thus moistened he smear the spots... And he also warms water on the fire, and he holds the stone over it Water... and put him in the water... wash his face often with this water and he will have soft skin and beautiful color on his face...
For pigment spots on the face, age spots and skin blemishes, moisten an amethyst tumbled stone with saliva and rub over the area. If you wash yourself often with the condensation water from the amethyst (hold the stone over boiling water) you will get beautiful skin.
The rock crystal
"... And whoever has a bump growing or swelling on his throat, let him warm the crystal in the sun and pour wine over the warm stone and drink it often..."
You warm the rock crystal in the sun and then pour wine over the crystal, which you collect in a vessel. This wine helps with many of the side effects of thyroid disease, such as feelings of anxiety, anxiety, overexcitability and depressive moods. It is advisable to bottle this wine in well-cleaned, sterile wine bottles so that you can have it in stock even on sun-free days. Drinking a glass of this crystal wine every day, preferably on an empty stomach, is an effective, supportive remedy.
“... And if glands or scrofula appear on a person's neck, then he warms this stone in the sun and so warm he ties it with a bandage to the glands or scrofula during the day or at night. And so let him do often, and they will disappear. Even if a bump grows or swells on the throat... he often places the crystal warmed in the sun warmly on the throat above the bump and it will shrink...”
There is a very effective remedy for thyroid diseases and even goiters. You heat the rock crystal in the sun, tie the warm stone to your throat or heat a tight chain and wear it. To achieve better heating of the stone, place it on a reflective surface (aluminum foil, silver plate, light oven tray).
The beryl
Beryl powder is an excellent detoxifier.
Application: If you have a very upset stomach or food poisoning, stir a small pinch into water for five consecutive days and drink on an empty stomach. However, the product never replaces a visit to the doctor or a stay in the hospital!
“...and if a person eats or drinks poison, then he should immediately scrape the beryl moderately into spring water or other water, and he should drink immediately, and he should do so for five days in which he drinks once on an empty stomach, and he will either spit out the poison through nausea or it will go out through his backside...
The Chrysolite
“...and he has almost a kind of life-giving power within him, so that when he comes to lie with the newborn young of a bird or other animal, he is so strengthened by his power that he would begin prematurely , to run away...
The power of this stone, which, as Hildegard says, has something life-giving in it, could be used here for the development of children (newborns). You can give the baby a chrysolite as an anklet or pendant.
“...And this stone strengthens the knowledge in the person who should have it with him, so that whoever has good knowledge and good art should place this stone on his heart, and as long as it lies there, the knowledge and the good art not in him...
Chrysolite strengthens existing knowledge and enhances the artistry in people. Today the name “Chrysolite” is hardly known anymore; it is offered in the gemstone trade as Perdot or Peridot.
Chrysoprase
“And in whatever member of a man is afflicted with gout, let him put chrysoprase on his naked skin, and the gout will go away... in whatever place this stone is, where there is a deadly poison, there it will lose (that Poison) its powers so that without powers it becomes weak as water..."
Chrysoprase is the rheumatism and gout stone. You either place a tumbled stone directly on the painful area or wear a chrysoprase necklace. Place a bracelet or pendant on your bare skin and fix it here. You also place the stone in a drink (for example fennel tea) and drink it so that the internal toxins change and targeted elimination can take place. This has proven itself very well in practice.
The jasper
“And whoever has a bad cold, let him hold the jasper to his mouth and breathe on it with his warm breath so that it becomes warm and moist, and then put it in the nostrils and press his nose shut with his hand so that it... The warmth of that stone penetrates the head. The juices of the head will be released more quickly and mildly and the patient will feel better. But let a person who is deaf in one ear hold the jasper to his mouth and let him breathe on it with his warm breath, so that it becomes warm and moist. And immediately he put it in his ear and put thin tow on that stone. And so he closes the ear so that the warmth of this stone penetrates the ear... and in this way the sick person will regain his hearing."
A jasper olive (attached to a chain) has proven useful for these applications.
“And whoever has storms of humours, i.e. gout, in the heart or in the loins or in any other member of man, let him put the jasper on that place and press it until it becomes warm there, and the gout will go away because the good warmth and the good power heals and calms those incorrectly warm and cold juices.”
If there is insufficient blood flow to the heart muscle or if there are arrhythmias, place the stone on the stone until it warms up. Repeat this process several times; In case of pain, gout of any kind, sciatica, etc., place the jasper on it or fix it on the area of pain.
And when lightning and thunder appear in one's sleep, it is good that the person has the jasper with them, and in the event of fantasies and mirages they avoid and leave it.
If you have nightmares, Hildegard recommends keeping this stone close to you at night so that it regulates your dreams.
Carnelian
“...and if blood flows from someone's nose, then warm wine, and in the warmed wine put carnelian. And so give it to him to drink, and the blood will stop flowing.
This remedy works promptly for nosebleeds. It is advisable to take red wine for psychological reasons; This is warmed up and carnelian is put in it and the person concerned is allowed to drink the wine warm and in sips...
The Onyx
... But even if you are oppressed by sadness, look carefully at the onyx and soon put it in your mouth, and the oppression of your spirit will disappear.
“And whoever has a strong fever, let him soak the onyx in vinegar for five days, and then, when he has taken it out, let him mix and season all his dishes with this vinegar and eat them like that, and the fever will go away and easily disappear, because the good heat of the onyx, mixed with the heat of the vinegar, drives away the harmful juices from which fevers arise."
For very severe fevers, place the onyx stone in pure wine vinegar for five days and use this vinegar to season all of the fever patient's dishes and his fever will subside. This fever medicine is used for fever patients with persistent fevers who have reacted poorly or not at all to other fever medicines.
The pearls
“...and they are not useful in medicine because they bring people more illness than health. For if a man were to put (a pearl) in his mouth, he would contract almost such diseases and become as sick as if he had taken poison. And if he also put them on his skin, so that a flesh would become warm from them, he would draw the poison from them into himself, and in this way he would become sick and suffer pain..."
Hildegard warns against wearing pearls because they make the wearer sick. Perhaps this is where the saying “Pearls mean tears” comes from.
The Prasem
“But anyone who is injured somewhere on their body as a result of a fall or a stab should take old fat and mix sage and tansy in the same weight and press the prasem into it. And then he warms it up in the sun or on the fire, and then he mixes it all with this stone and puts it so warm on the spot where it hurts, and he will feel better..."
You add about 50 g of old fat, a handful of fresh sage and fresh tansy, chopped into small pieces, and squeeze a prasem into this ointment. This ointment is now warmed in the sun or on a fire (wood-burning grill) and placed on the painful area with the stone. This ointment should always be on hand for severely painful injuries, bruises, and bruises.
“Whoever has a burning fever, let him wrap the prasem in some dough of rye bread and tie the one thus wrapped in a cloth, and let him leave it tied over his navel for three days and nights and the fever will go away from him. “
Since Hildegard speaks of a burning fever, sunburn or sun allergy could also be thought of here.
The Ruby
“If a person has an illness, a fever of some kind, gout or some other change in the fluid balance, place a carbuncle at midnight because that is where its power is particularly effective - over the sick person's navel. But only let it lie over the sick person's navel until the person feels that the stone is warming him a little and then remove it immediately. So this stone drives away all kinds of diseases from people and conquers them."
The ruby as a carbuncle
“If anyone has a headache, let him place a carbuncle on the crown of his head until the area is warmed by the stone and then remove it immediately, because the power of this stone penetrates his head faster and more powerfully than the most precious ointment does could, and so he will find relief.”
The ruby helps promptly with headaches, not migraines. Do not leave it on for longer than 20 minutes, otherwise the effect will be the opposite.
The Sardonyx
“... And it has active powers in its nature, and gives some strength to the five senses of man, and it is a certain remedy for them... For when a man places it on his bare skin and He also often takes it in his mouth so that his breath touches it, then takes it out again and then takes it back into himself, then the mind, the knowledge and all the senses of his body are strengthened, and so this person becomes the great Anger and stupidity and debauchery taken away..."
This stone strengthens, among other things, our five sense organs and is an important aid for poor concentration. To strengthen your sense organs, it is best to wear a pendant that you should put in your mouth often.
The sapphire
“... But even a person who is completely afflicted with gout, so that he cannot have patience in his head or in the rest of his body because of too much oppression, let him put this stone in his mouth, and the gout in him will disappear ...And whoever is greatly moved in anger, let him immediately put the sapphire in his mouth, and the anger will be quenched and depart from the sick person..."
The sapphire helps with gout, rheumatism or impatience when you put it in your mouth. Always use a stone without a setting or metal!
The Sarder
“And whoever is hard of hearing through any disease, let him dip the stone in pure wine, and let him put it wet in a thin linen cloth, and put it in the deaf ear, and let him put thin tow on the outside of that cloth, and its warmth will be absorbed into it Penetrate ear. And do this often, and he will regain his hearing."
If you have hearing loss or hearing loss due to illnesses (such as scarlet fever, shingles, meningitis), a sardine is dipped in wine and placed in a linen cloth while it is still damp. You now put this in your ear and cover the whole thing with cotton. This application must be repeated several times a day until recovery occurs. It is recommended to use a sardine olive as it is easier to put in the ear.
...And therefore he is pure of air and water, and (he is) well mixed in the good mixture of heat, and by his strength he averts the adversities of disease."
So whenever an epidemic (flu epidemic, etc.) is spreading, carry a Sarder with you.
The Emerald
“Therefore, whoever has pain in the heart or in the stomach or in the side, let him have the emerald with him, so that the flesh of his body may be warmed by that stone, and he will be better. But if those diseases become so overwhelming in him that they cannot restrain themselves from their storm, then let that person immediately put the emerald in his mouth, so that it may become moist with his saliva and that the saliva from that stone may become warm, and he insert it into and out of his body often, and the sudden floods of those diseases will undoubtedly subside.”
For heart pain, stomach pain and side stitches, wear the emerald on your bare skin, in the form of a pendant or a chain and put it in your mouth often.
Health
Moxibustion – the setting of burning cones
“Moxibustion is good and beneficial at any time because, if done carefully, it reduces the fluid and mucous juices under the skin and gives health to the body. It is suitable for young people as well as old people; for young people, because when their flesh and blood increase in youth, the harmful humors also increase in them; But for old people, because when they lose their flesh and blood in old age, slimy juices remain between their skin and their flesh..."
The setting of burning cones is particularly suitable for treating muscle tension, joint rheumatism and headaches because the blood vessels open due to the heating, thus ensuring better blood circulation.
Human internal organs
“The soul is fiery, airy and moist, and it possesses the whole heart of man. The liver warms the heart, the lungs cover it, and the stomach is an internal space in the human body for the absorption of food. The heart is the seat of knowledge, the liver the seat of feeling, the lungs are like a vein of reason, and the mouth is the mouthpiece for what man utters and the receiver of what refreshes the body; he produces the voice, but does not receive the voice. But the ear receives the voice, but does not produce the voice..."
Hildegard's statement shows that a holistic situation always prevails in humans. According to Hildegard, the organs are also responsible for the mental life and the spiritual within us.
The complexion of a sick person
“If a person lies sick in bed and is red in the face, he has diseased, poisonous blood due to diseased intestines. And that's why his face is red... Such a person is not sad, but rather cheerful, and his illness is bearable. If someone is pale and thin during their illness, the black bile combines with paralysis, so that they become cold. Because of this cold, his face is pale and his flesh does not thrive or grow on him. Such a person is sad during his illness and is prone to anger.”
The color of the patient's face shows those around him whether he is dealing with a pleasant or irritable patient.
The connection between extreme summer heat and different foods
“If a person eats very cold foods in the summer when they are very warm inside, they easily trigger gout. But if he eats very warm food, when he is very warm inside in the summer, he develops phlegm within himself. Therefore, people should eat moderately hot and cold foods in summer, and these will provide them with good blood and healthy meat. If a person eats a lot in the summer, when he is very warm inside, his blood becomes excessively warm as a result of eating so much, his fluids deteriorate, and the flesh of his body swells and becomes unnaturally bloated because the air is then too warm . If he then only eats moderately, it won't harm him, but he will stay healthy."
In summer, only eat a moderate amount of lukewarm to warm food so that the body stays strong.
The sneezing
“If the blood in a person's veins is not lively and rapid, but lies there as if it were sleeping, and if the juices in him do not flow quickly but only sluggishly, the soul naturally notices this and shakes the whole body by sneezing and causes the blood and humors of man to awaken and return to their proper condition. If the water were not kept moving by storms and floods, it would become putrid; And so a person would rot inside if he didn't sneeze or blow his nose."
Hildegard wants to explain the meaning of sneezing: by sneezing, the sluggishly flowing juices (e.g. in the case of swollen sinuses due to a cold) are “awakened” again.
Why humans don't swim
“Because man's body is heavy and because he works with his hands, walks with his feet, has an upright posture and does not have much of the nature of air and water, he cannot swim in water by nature , unless he learns this on his own. But the animals have the strength in their legs, walk leaning forward and are moved by their legs as if by the wind. Therefore, some of them can swim naturally, because just as they walk leaning forward on land, they also swim leaning forward in water. Humans don't do that because they walk completely upright and bend forward and stretch out when swimming."
Here we can read that humans cannot swim naturally. This is often misrepresented today when it comes to “baby swimming”. It should not be confused with the fact that the toddler feels comfortable in warm water (bath water), but only with the holding, safe hand of the father or mother.
The conception of a human being
“...afterwards the breath of life comes and touches this form, without the mother knowing it, like a violent warm wind and flows into it...but there is still such great weakness in this form that it cannot move , but just lies there, sleeps and only breathes a little...Now the child moves, and the mother feels it and from then on it always stays in motion."
The harmony between body and soul
“As long as body and soul have to live together, they carry out a tremendous conflict with each other, since the soul suffers wherever the flesh delights in sin... The soul loves its body and considers it a beautiful garment and a pleasing ornament ...Man turned "towards the north", the area far from God...since then the relationship between soul and body has been strained, and it is often difficult to bring the two into harmony..."
From these texts you can see how important it is for Hildegard to take a closer look at her own dark sides (sorrow, worry, suffering) and to gain a good attitude towards it in order to bring body and soul into harmony and balance, for what purpose In their view, this also includes the relationship between man and God.
Weakened people and children who lack appetite
“And whoever is so sick that he cannot eat bread, let him take barley and oats in equal weight and add some fennel and boil (it) in water at the same time and drink it like a broth.”
Recipe: 1 tbsp. Barley, 1 tbsp. Boil oats, 2 teaspoons of fennel with 1 liter of water for about 25 minutes, strain and if necessary refine with a little cinnamon.
Stimulate your metabolism instead of taking laxatives
“... (laxative) drinks that cleanse the stomach are of no use to people... And when the bad humors get out of hand in people, they sometimes form a misty smoke in them...this spreads out in their intestines , causes the remaining pathogens to move and does not allow the ingested food to enter the stomach through the correct, natural entrance or exit through the correct, natural exit..."
Taking laxatives is quick and relieves for the time being, but the cause of the poor to insufficient digestion has not been taken into account. So it's better to use foods and spices that promote digestion and get to the root of the problem.
Remedies for flu
The pellargonium mixed powder
“If you have a cold, hold this powder to your nose and just breathe in the scent of it...and the cold will go away and go away.” If you have a cold, simply put some flu powder on an odor-free surface and smell it often.
Warm wine
...and whoever suffers in the chest or whoever suffers in the throat...drink this powder in warm wine..." Warm wine with flu powder helps quickly and effectively with general flu conditions.
Flu powder
“...If you have a headache, eat this powder with light salt on bread...” If you have a flu headache, eaten some flu powder with salt on bread; it helps immediately. “Whoever is plagued with pain in the heart, eat this powder with bread or by licking it from the hand.” To be used for flu heart pain!
Various flu remedies from the Hildegard Pharmacy
The horehound-mullein mixed herbs
“Take fennel and dill of equal weight, add a third of horehound and cook with wine. Strain it through a fine cloth, drink it and the cough will go away." 2 tbsp. Boil flu herbs in ½ l of wine for 5 minutes and drink warm throughout the day.
The fir wood
“...If the snot flows profusely from the nose, one should inhale the smoke of fir wood through the nose and the snot will loosen more easily and subside...”
The wormwood oil
“And let the juice of wormwood also be poured into olive oil... and if any man suffers pain in the chest and coughs as a result, let him be anointed with it...”
Heart disease
Heartache from raw food
“... because the harmful juices that escape from the liver strive for the spleen and the heart and cause trouble for these organs... If a person has eaten raw vegetables or other raw foods that have not been cooked on the fire Even if they are not prepared with any spices, they cannot be easily cooked in his stomach... and so they also send a noxious brood to the spleen. This causes it to bloat, swell and become sore. Due to its painful swelling, it also causes pain to the heart..."
According to Hildegard, you should never eat food raw. Salads that are pickled with vinegar are no longer raw. Many heart patients have their heart disease due to this bloated spleen, which is often caused by raw food.
The big heart cure – Part 1: The Greek clover pills
“If noxious humors have prevailed in the intestines and spleen of man, and have brought much suffering to the heart through black bile, let him take the same weight of galangal and bertram, a quarter of each of them white pepper, or, if If you don't have white pepper available, use four times as much pepper herb and process the whole thing into powder. Then he takes bean flour, adds the powder mentioned and mixes everything with the juice of fenugreek, but without water, wine or any other liquid. Then he should form little cakes out of all this and let them dry in the warmth of the sun... Then he should eat these little cakes both after breakfast and on an empty stomach...”
You take two Greek clover pills for the first 10 days after eating, then two pills each some time before and after eating. For a complete heart cure you should also take the heart juice (fennel potion) and the Greek clover powder.
The big heart cure – Part 2: The heart juice (fennel potion)
“Then take licorice, five times more fennel, sugar equal to the weight of licorice and a little honey, make a potion out of it, namely the Lauter potion and drink it both after breakfast and on an empty stomach to combat heartache!”
This sweet juice is best drunk after the Greek clover pills. So the sweetness of the heart juice takes away the spiciness of the pills.
The big heart cure – Part 3: The Greek clover powder mixture
“So take white pepper, a third of it cumin and half as much fenugreek as caraway, grind it into powder and eat it slowly with a bite of bread both on an empty stomach and after breakfast, before you feel weakness in your heart or the pain sets in there! “
Put a knife tip full of this powder on the bread and chew it slowly. If you use the big heart cure, consisting of Greek clover pills and powder as well as the fennel potion, you often notice a significant improvement in your heart condition after a short time, but you should definitely carry it out - as practice has shown - for up to 9 months.
The horseradish-galangal mixture – a heart powder
“And when the horseradish is green, it shall be dried in the sun, and to it shall be added powder of galangal in equal weight. And whoever has heartache, let him eat this powder after eating and on an empty stomach with bread, and he will be better.
Gum disease
“But whoever has flesh around his teeth that is rotten and whose teeth are weak, let him put warm vine ash in wine, as if he were making lye, and then wash his teeth and the flesh around his teeth with that wine. And he will do this often, and that flesh will become healthy and the teeth will become firm. But if his teeth are healthy, this washing will benefit them and they will become beautiful.”
Rebaschen dental care is a remedy for bleeding gums, receding gums and inflammation, which brings about an improvement after the first few applications.
Dental health
“If anyone wants to have healthy, strong teeth, early in the morning, when he gets up from his bed, take pure, cold water in his mouth and keep it in his mouth for a while so that the mucus that adheres to his teeth is softened. He should brush his teeth with the same water that he has in his mouth and repeat this often, then the mucus on his teeth will not increase and the teeth will remain healthy.
To get and keep strong and healthy teeth, rinse and brush your mouth and teeth thoroughly with cold water every morning when you get up.
The healing
“...And so wonderful works of God are native to all of God's creatures, in the animals and fish and birds, in the herbs and flowers and trees...”
In order to heal, Hildegard lives a life in harmony and harmony with herself and her environment. She shows this path using her 6 rules of life:
The life energy comes from the four world elements.
The right food and drink
Finding the rhythm of movement and rest, i.e. work and leisure.
Understand sleeping and waking as balanced forces.
The art of excretion and secretion of pathogenic fluids
Obtain the healing power by practicing Christian virtues.
“Cupping is useful and good at any time, so that the harmful juices and mucus that are in people are reduced... But those who have a lot of soft and fatty flesh can have their blood removed twice in a month through cupping...”
Cupping is a possible detoxification procedure used by Hildegard, which draws the bad and mucous fluids (lymph) out of the body.
The eye types
Fiery Eyes
“Anyone who has fiery eyes that resemble a black cloud next to the sun has naturally received them from the warm south wind. They are healthy because they come from the warmth of the fire. Dust and every foul stench harms them, because the brightness does not pay attention to the dust and the purity does not pay attention to an unknown stench.
Fiery eyes have nothing to do with a fiery look. They are those eyes that have a pupillary ring. These so-called “southern wind eyes” are extremely sensitive to dust, but are otherwise very healthy.
Brown (black) eyes
“Whoever has black or cloudy eyes, as a cloud sometimes has, got them mainly from the earth. They are stronger and sharper than other eyes and retain their visual acuity for a long time... but are easily damaged by the moisture of the earth and the moisture of water bodies and swamps...
Brown-eyed people have better visual acuity than all other eye types. However, complaints can occur in the area of lakes, coasts and swamp landscapes.
Rule of life
About eating and drinking
“So when a man eats and drinks, his vessels are filled and warmed with the juice of the food and drink, and that juice warms the blood and the liquid in the vessels, and the blood that is in the flesh draws Its red color comes from the juice in the vessels.”
Since your own well-being depends very much on the right diet, you should always make sure that you eat “the right thing”. Hildegard's nutritional advice is based on “subtlety” (medicinal value of food), “viriditas” (green power/life energy) and “discretio”, moderation. According to Hildegard, spelled is the basis of the “correct” diet.
Bile and its diseases
“...But the person in whom bile has greater powers than black bile can easily control anger. The person in whom the black bile is stronger than the bile is easily provoked to anger... But the black bile increases from bad, bitter, unclean and poorly prepared food..."
Hildegard once again points out that eating and drinking correctly, in conjunction with moderation and avoiding kitchen poisons and bad eating habits, influences black bile. We should always pay attention to a balance between black bile and bile. A “Hildegardian” meal promotes the flow of bile and thus brings about better digestion, while kitchen poisons and excess cause the black bile to overflow and thus also bring about anger.
Movement and rest, i.e. H. The healthy rhythm of life between work and leisure
“... If a man who is physically healthy walks around for a long time or stands upright for a long time, he does not suffer much harm... but he who is infirm should sit... because the woman is weaker than the man... It should only walk or stand moderately...On the other hand, anyone who rides the horse hardly suffers any damage because they are in the fresh air."
We now know how important it is to get enough exercise in the fresh air, especially to have enough oxygen, reduce aggression and cope better with noise and stress. Gardening, horse riding and hiking are ideal here. However, everyone should only expect as much as they can physically tolerate. The right measure also applies here!
Sleeping and waking
“When a person sleeps, his marrow recovers...If a person sleeps for a moderate amount of time, he will remain healthy...But it often happens that a person is awake and cannot sleep when his mind is distracted by various thoughts and circumstances and problems or caught up in great joy...A person should not sleep immediately after eating..."
Hildegard warns us not to turn night into day, so to get enough sleep to regenerate our over-stressed nerves. But she also explains the psychological hygiene you do every evening, reviewing the day again, reconciling with the people with whom you were not in harmony that day and then consciously letting go of the day. This is the only way to guarantee a restful sleep.
The right awakening
“Just as the light of day is announced by the dawn, so the human sensibility, together with reason, opens up all the powers of the soul. It enlivens the face of the human being, so that the human being's emotional life becomes touched and wide awake for all things."
The moon
The moon and the pruning and planting of trees and vines
“...Pruning and planting are done better on the waning moon than on the waxing moon...because of the rising and excess sap on the waxing moon, they don't take root and grow as well and take care of it...and a lot of sap flows out of them..."
Hildegard's rule: Prune your trees and vines in March when the moon is waning so that they don't lose too much juice and can have more fruit. Planting trees is always done during the waning moon all year round to promote better root growth.
The moon and its influence
“...When the moon waxes and becomes full, then the blood in people also increases, and when the moon wanes, then the blood in people also decreases. If the blood in the human being had increased to full level and then if it did not decrease again in the human being, he would completely burst.”
This explanation by Hildegard shows how much humans, as a microcosm, represent a part of the entire cosmos, with the same natural laws: The moon not only ensures the ebb and flow of the enormous amounts of water in the ocean, but also has an effect in the human body.
The fruit and vegetable harvest
“...as fruits and vegetables that are harvested on the waxing moon and the meat of livestock slaughtered at this time has greater nutritional value because it is then full of juice and blood...Makes an exception If you want it to last longer...then harvest the vegetables and fruit and slaughter the cattle when the moon is waning so that it can last longer..."
The rule according to Hildegard is:
Harvest fruits and vegetables that are to be stored when the moon is waning.
Harvest fruit and vegetables that will be processed immediately when the moon is waxing.
Harvest seeds for vegetables when the moon is waning.
Harvest seeds for spices and salad on the waxing moon.
The moon and the felling of trees
“...Even in the trees... the sap increases as the moon waxes and decreases as the moon wanes. Therefore, if they are felled when the moon is waxing... they will be more eaten by vermin and woodworm than if they were felled when the moon is waning..."
The moon and collecting herbs
“If noble, good herbs are cut from the ground on the waxing moon or pulled from the earth with the roots when they are in full juice, they are better suited for the preparation of latwergs, ointments and every medicine than if they are collected on the waning moon .”
So always harvest herbs for making medicinal products when the moon is waxing!
The stars
“The stars sometimes show many signs, depending on what people are doing and how they behave. But they reveal neither the future nor people's thoughts, but only what people have already made known as their intention or are making known in word and deed because this is what the atmosphere absorbs. She communicates this to the stars, and in this way they immediately reveal the works of man. God created the stars to serve man..."
Hildegard is saying quite clearly that there is no astrology, i.e. interpretation based on the constellations. Hildegard von Bingen's “Astronomy” is a very precise interpretation of the respective part of the year (month) and the associated character trait that the person born in this month receives. But Hildegard also thinks that all words and actions go out into the atmosphere like waves and then return, both good and bad.
The Dawn
“The fact that the sun is red when it rises in the morning is due to the cold and dampness of the atmosphere... Similarly, late in the day when the sun is red towards evening. This is due to the cold in the atmosphere, because then the sun sinks into the ocean."
The rain
“The rain that falls suddenly and heavily on the earth is harmful and damages the soil and the fruits of the earth because it contains certain pollutants. Moderate rain is beneficial, watering the earth and causing it to produce fruit, because it is gentle and pure and clean in terms of benefit and fertility.”
The months
The second month
“This is the month of purification. Nature cleanses itself of everything sick. So does the human soul. If one compares it with the sap of a tree through which all the fruits of that tree flourish, it is through the soul of man that all works are realized. This person has received from nature a strength, a compelling power with an outwardly clear and precise overview of situations. The cold of the season only shows itself through his somewhat cooler nature. He is not someone who flaunts his feelings, but rather keeps a clear head."
The third month
“The third month comes with a wild whirlwind. It can bring powerful storms with it, but it also sets the seeds of the earth in motion with its multiple winds. With this powerful way, nature wants to shake up the frozen season and set it in motion so that spring can come. So does man; He can achieve a lot thanks to his stormy character and his penchant for recognition. However, he must first overcome his pride, his storm, often through painful experiences, before his works begin to bear fruit.”
The fourth month
“April is the month that embodies viriditas, green power and fragrance, even if it can thunder terribly in it. In April we experience the awakening of nature after a rigid winter, the sprouting of the first green, viriditas, and the first scent of the heralds of spring. Man receives the green power that nature also brings with him, but only if he firmly believes in God. It is man who spreads everywhere the reputation of righteousness and usefulness to the glory of God.”
The fifth month
“The hard struggle of nature transitions into a sweet, easy time in this part of the year. May carries the most wonderful scents of flowers and makes people's hearts happy. You can clearly see the first sprouting fruits here, which primarily capture people's strong sense of taste. The person born in this month has a lot of joy from nature, but he lacks coldness and stubbornness. With all the sharpness of his reason, he fundamentally distinguishes everything that is visible to him. This is the only way he can live a carefree, happy life according to his nature.”
The sixth month
“This month the fruits are making progress and their ripening is already in the air. This dry month impresses the fruits with the power to grow and reproduce. The person who is safe in this month has his warmth from nature and, if developed properly, can bring it to full maturity. But he also has strong shoulders to take on any work, both physical and mental, and complete it. The second sense, hearing and listening, is an important detail for him. And just as the famous sheep's cold in June can bring a cooling down in nature, this person is also given a special strength of character, often through a sobering cooling down of his overzealous actions, a consistent perseverance, even in the most difficult and less advantageous undertakings."
The seventh month
“July is the month that brings the fruit to ripeness; it is characterized by absolute drought, drought, but also massive downpours, often in the form of heavy thunderstorms and hailstorms. Just as nature shows itself in this month, so does the human being born in this month. Above all, his maturity is evident; he is ahead of the others in many ways, especially when it comes to his health. He avoids everything that harms him and sometimes uses the strength of his arms to help him. However, when he allows himself to be instructed by the warnings of the Holy Spirit, he rails against vices and sins with unusual zeal and thus finds his true salvation."
The eighth month
“This month has a certain strength and joy of life but also contradictions: on the one hand the scorching sun, on the other side terrible thunderstorms. So does the person who was born in this month. This powerful creature who can achieve great rest through the works of his hands. However, he must not lose sight of faith on his passionate path and after severe storms, so that through reflection and repentance he can use his fighting existence for good works and virtues."
The ninth month
“This month we find the ripening time. The terrible thunderstorms are no longer there and we find a fixed mixture of cold and warmth. It is a time of year when prosperity becomes visible, nature invites you to harvest. So does the person who was born in this month. He naturally avoids any arguments, but also exuberance, a rather even-tempered guy whose special character trait is patience. It is also this virtue that always stabilizes the mental life of this person and gives him a certain direction in life."
The tenth month
“This month holds maturity. The harvest has come in, the cellars are full. Nature is shedding its leaves, preparing for the cold winter. In the cycle of life it also represents the maturity of old age, where the person who is born in this month no longer needs to worry about the harvest, about the fullness of life, he has therefore received a coldness from nature that he can only compensate by seeking and striving for the right warmth.”
The eleventh month
“This month brings the cold, gone is the warmth and richness of nature. However, this cold is not bitter enough to freeze the earth, but rather stirs up the pain. The person born in this month defends himself against this cold so that too many painful thoughts do not burden his heart and thus suppress the joy within him. He must be very careful not to leave the daylight of holiness, otherwise he will sigh in self-pity and wail with pain and great sadness and will harm his soul. However, by contemplating the Holy Spirit, i.e. through good deeds and works, he can elicit new strength from his soul."
The twelfth month
“During this season the earth becomes hard and freezes, making the land and also life difficult. The soul of the person born here also has its struggle. Only in the glow of the gifts of the Holy Spirit can this soul find its great warmth. For just as the body, after the departure of the soul, is without heat and remains cold, so also the soul, without the fervor of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, becomes hardened by anger and forgets its own nature."
The powers of the four elements
“...When God created the world, he consolidated it through the four elements, namely fire, water, air and earth... Fire has five powers namely heat, cold, moisture, air and movement... The air has four powers, namely, it sends out the dew, produces everything green, causes the breath of wind to blow, whereby it ripens everything... The water has fifteen powers, namely, heat, air, moisture, flooding, the speed, the mobility, it gives the trees the sap, the fruits the taste, the plants the green... it carries birds, feeds fish, allows animals to live in its warmth, keeps the reptiles in their foam and keeps everything going Life. ...The earth has seven powers; Sometimes it is cold in summer and warm in winter, has the power to grow and wither, produces germs, keeps living beings alive and supports everything..."
Fire, water, air and earth
"... Man has fire, air, water and earth and he is made up of them... all the elements work with him and he with them..."
Hildegard sees healing, the healing of humans, in connection with creation. Here, in the middle of the cosmos, humans are in close interaction with the four world elements: fire, water, air and earth, which make up the world, but also the structure of the human body. According to Hildegard, when humans disregard the cosmic laws and brutally destroy creation, this also has considerable, even catastrophic consequences for their health.
The four elements, fire, air, water and earth in humans
“Fire has five forces in nature, just as man has five sense organs. Fire manifests itself as heat when we see, as cold when we smell, as moisture when we taste, as air when we hear, and as movement when we touch. The air with its four forces is in the breath and in the reason of man. It performs its service in man through its living breath, which is nothing other than the soul, and it is the wing of his flight when man draws the breath into himself and lets it out so that he can live... The water with its fifteen powers is preserved in the moisture and in the blood of man... The flesh of man from the earth..."
If the four elements in humans are in harmony, then, according to Hildegard, humans can live as a whole.
The animals
The dog
“The dog is very warm and he has something common and natural in the behavior of people and therefore he feels and understands the person and loves him and likes to stay with him... And the dog notices the hatred and the anger and dishonesty in a person, and he often growls against him... But if there is a thief in the house or a person who has the will to steal, then he growls against him and becomes angry and has a different attitude towards him than against him another person, and he follows him and checks his smell with his nose... and in this way the thief can be recognized...
Since Hildegard was able to see the entire creation in her visions, we also find many animals described in her “Physica”.
Bloodletting in animals
“...if a horse, cow or donkey is weak and thin, half a cup of blood should be taken from it depending on the degree of its obesity or thinness. After bloodletting, you should give him soft food and dry, tender hay to eat. Then the animal should recover for two weeks or a week or four days after the bloodletting until it regains its strength... After three months have elapsed, blood should be taken again from the same animal during the bloodletting in the fourth month and no earlier, unless: There is an acute emergency due to illness... Blood should be taken from a sheep often, but only a little, by phlebotomy, otherwise it will easily become ill with constant air changes. In the case of sheep, bloodletting should be carried out in moist, moderately warm air, because then the harmful juices in them increase. If the air is dry you should refrain from bleeding because then your juices will increase.”
Explanations of terms
The Viriditas – The Green Power
“...I, the highest and fiery power, have ignited every spark of life... The air lives in greenness and blossom... without the beauty of life-green fields - without the blessing of God - will lie fallow... because there is God and man from whom all green life force springs..."
Hildegard von Bingen describes the green power in everything that creation produces. The green power is in the food, the plants, the gemstones, but also in a positive attitude to life. For Hildegard, viriditas is life in general, the life energy that can only come from God. According to Hildegard, a person who lacks a connection to the creator of this power or who has lost faith has no personal viriditas and green power. He “dries up,” he falls ill, and his soul atrophies through grief and discontent. According to Hildegard, people can be saved if they reflect and return to their faith in Christ.
The subtlety
“...is warm, and that warmth has the right mixture...”
Good food for a healthy person..." "...is not good for a sick and weak person to eat..."
The term subtlety is used primarily in Hildegard's nutritional theory. By this Hildegard means the relationship, the purpose that God placed in natural things and which are hidden for us in plants, animals and stones. If we eat foods that lack subtlety, such as preserved or long-lasting foods or foods modified by irradiation, they may fill us up, but they lack the viriditas, the greenness and freshness, to properly nourish our bodies nourish.
Discretio – moderation
“... the soul loves discreet measure in all things. Whenever the human body eats and drinks without discretion or does something else of this kind, the powers of the soul are injured...
An important virtue in Hildegard is “discretio”, moderation. According to Hildegard, people should impose the right measure on themselves in all things.
Play of forces
Discord and unity
The Discord:
“I don't like the south and I turn away from the east... The west only supports the darkness and the north has a firm grip on what moves in the darkness... I behave like that in every situation how I like it..."
The unity:
“Could you then destroy heaven and its natural laws? No way!... You want to establish your kingdom in no man's land, but you are just useless there in all things because you blaspheme the works of God. Because that is precisely the nothingness that lacks everything good...
Stubbornness and salvation
The stubbornness:
“What merits and benefits do I have? Just the fire! Because I and the species I was born from, we want nothing else. I flee from everything that shines and refuse to follow bright works...I am there to plunder souls and don't want to know anything about the adornment of bright things...
The salvation of the soul:
“You are the arrow of Satan, buzzing ominously in the darkness...But the blessed rise up with the army of angels under the banner of faith and storm mightily against you...In baptism and with the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, which the Savior gave us in his incarnation, they will drown you as in the deluge of water...
The feasting – the abstinence
The feast:
“God created everything, should I therefore lack anything? ...God also wants people to take care of their physical well-being.”
Abstinence:
“... You stuff yourself so full, you glutton, that your veins almost burst and convulse. Just as the downpour ravages the land, so too does the excessive consumption of meat and wine bring man only blasphemous delusion!”
The lie – the truth
The lie:
“Who would be the one who could always tell the truth! If I sincerely wished my fellow human beings happiness, I would have to harm myself.”
The truth:
“... But I stand like a pillar in all the paths of the Lord. I am a loud trumpet of God's righteousness.
Lust, fornication – chastity
The lust:
“I want to drag this figure of an image of God into the dirt, no matter how annoying it is to God. In this way I can ruin everyone. For after all I have my own glory... May heaven have its own righteousness - earth also has its obligations..."
Chastity:
“I don’t want to lie on your bed where you roll around – where you, as it were, provoke desecration. I sit in the bright light of the sun and look only to the King of kings, as I do my good works of my own free will. In the harmony of the happy life I possess the joys of honesty and modesty and it is neither disturbed by the insults of fornication nor sullied by unchastity...
The Exuberance – The Breeding
The exuberance:
“What harm could joy bring to a person? At least it makes you laugh... What would a person who always feels like dying be like? Nothing. So let us be happy while there is still something to be happy about here."
The breeding:
“... with your unkempt manners, a playful person, you are like a restless wind and in your changeability you are like a worm that burrows in the ground... But I, I am a belt of brightness and a cloak of honor. I have been invited to the king's wedding and will appear there with friends and in breeding rooms. I appear there radiantly, in all the splendor of justice.”
The addiction to pleasure – the modesty
The addiction to pleasure:
“How much better is it to lose yourself than to mourn... If I only wore sadness in front of my fellow human beings - they would avoid me. I want to spin around in a merry whirlwind so that everything can have fun with me... man and animal and animal and man...
The modesty:
“... Your desire is partly human, partly animalistic... Overall, your behavior is more like a dead creature than a living being, because you only strive for what your heart desires. But I blush with shame at all this and find my protection under the wings of the cherubim. The mysteries of God are made known to me in the precepts of Scripture. In heavenly things I am nothing but life, ...and in an honorable attitude, according to God's will, I see that from which you flee in blind ignorance.
World Pain – Heavenly Joy
The world's pain:
“Woe is me that I was born! What is my life about? Who will help me, who will save me? Such trouble could not affect me if God knew about me! I get nothing out of putting my trust in God. I was created for misfortune and was born in misfortune and so I live without any consolation...
The Heavenly Joy:
“...But I look at everything that God created with right eyes and already here I own the heavenly home of the flowers of roses and lilies and all the greenery, I tenderly take them to my heart and sing to all of God's works Praise, while you only pile up pain on top of pain...I only judge value or unworthiness according to God's laws...
The inappropriate merriment – the longing for God
The inappropriate humor:
“In me I find the sweet life and the splendid path.”
The longing for God:
“How can you consider the blind and mute life to be the real life?”
Forgetfulness of God – Holiness
The forgetfulness of God:
“If God doesn’t know me, how can I know him? I will also pursue my own plans and only act as I please and what I know and understand...
The Holiness:
“Who created you and gave you life? God alone! Why don't you realize that you can't create yourself? I call on God and receive from him everything that belongs to life...because God alone gives man food and drink and everything he needs. People see it growing and prospering, but do not understand how it happens... God alone can sustain all of humanity over time and fill even the smallest thing on earth with life.
Prayers
God's help
“My God, you created me; I live through you and seek you when I sigh for good things.
I know you as my God and only know that I can serve you because you have given me insight.
O you, my helper in all good things, through you I do good works. I will cast all my hope on you and wear your favor as a garment.
You are my savior, protect me from iniquity when my conscience warns me to leave evil behind”
Indignity
“In the depths of my soul, Lord, I recognize myself as ashes and mold, like a trembling feather I sit anxiously in the shadow.”
Inconstancy
“O all-knowing God who created good, I tremble in the consciousness of sin. I recognize myself in remorse, but I don't let it take effect, and I'm left with fear.
Doubts
“O God, did you not create me? The miserable earth is crushing me!” Do I know whether God even exists? Where is my King and God?”
Trust in adversity
“Ah, wretched man that I am, once a living breath, I am surrounded by the stench of sin; I can no longer look joyfully to heaven...But I will trust in you, my God, that through true repentance I can be freed from the hellish torments I deserve.
