Grow your own avocado plant

Grow your own avocado plant

What do you do with an avocado pit once the flesh is eaten? Throw it away? Nope. You grow a plant from it.

What do you need:

  • an avocado pit

  • Toothpicks

  • a suitable glass

  • Water

The first thing you have to do is let the core dry for 1 to 2 days. Then stick the toothpicks into the core as shown in the picture so that they point upwards at an angle. Now you need a suitable glass, fill it with water and hang the core there. The core should always be halfway in the water. So always make sure there is enough water in the glass and top up if necessary.

Now it can take up to 3 to 4 weeks before the tender roots form and around the same time the first cotyledon becomes visible through the core.

If this is the case, the time has come to implement the core. Take it out of the jar and carefully place it in good potting soil. The core should be well covered with soil so that only the tip shows out.

While the tree is growing, always keep the soil moist so that no waterlogging occurs, otherwise the little tree may die.
