Fennel is a flowering perennial herb with yellow flowers. The plant looks similar to dill, except for the bulb. The leaves are feathery and finer than dill leaves. The stems are erect, smooth and green. They grow up to 2.5 m high. The leaves are finely pinnate with thread-like segments. Most, but not all, varieties form a stem bulb that rests on the ground or is raised by a stem segment. The leaf branches fan out from the stem and form the tuber. The flowers appear in umbels with a diameter of 5 to 15 cm. The umbels are crescent-shaped and contiguous, with each section containing 20 to 50 tiny yellow flowers. The fruit is a small seed, approximately 0.6 to 0.9 cm long with longitudinal grooves. Fennel has a licorice flavor and is very fragrant.

🛑 In rare cases, fennel triggers allergies, such as photodermatitis. Fennel has hormonal effects and therefore should not be consumed by pregnant women.

You can eat everything about fennel. For example, the tubers can be roasted or further processed and the seeds can be used as a spice.

In the Middle Ages it was considered a means of protection against evil magic and witchcraft.

For bladder catarrh, which is manifested by pain in the bladder and urethra and where urination is already painful, a tea mixture made from fennel seeds, fresh herbs and parsley is effective. At the same time, sitz baths should be done.

If you pour fennel seeds into hot water, fennel vapor is created, which is particularly good for lung problems, coughs and respiratory diseases.

Hildegard of Bingen: Its seed is of a warm nature and useful for health, for whoever eats it on an empty stomach reduces the foul mucus and suppresses the foul smell of his breath and his eyes can see more clearly. Man take fennel seeds, and half of galangal, and half of galangal diptam, and half of hawkweed diptam, and powder them together. The powder keeps healthy people healthy, but it strengthens the sick.

Even a person who is plagued by melancholy, if he crush fennel into juice and often anoint his forehead, temples, chest and stomach, the melancholy in him will disappear.
