The upper side of the leaf is hairy and green, while the underside is whitish and velvety. The flower heads are up to 7.5 cm in diameter and contain 50 to 100 yellow ray florets and 100 to 250 yellow disc florets. The real Scabwort blooms from June to August. The flowers are large, bright yellow and resemble a double sunflower. The brown, aromatic root branches underground. It is large, thick, mucilaginous and bitter with a camphor-like smell and a floral background scent.

🛑 Caution: Sometimes contact allergies or mucous membrane irritations occur when collecting, so only use if you are not affected by them. Be careful of cross-reactions if you are allergic to daisy plants. Then try out whether Scabwort is tolerated. Large doses of elecampane can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Scabwort should be avoided during pregnancy. Diabetics should consult their doctor before consuming the plant. Scabwort should also be avoided before operations and 2 weeks after a planned operation.

It is best to start with a small dose and increase it slowly without experiencing unwanted side effects such as nausea or excessive drying.

Elecampane can cure enchanted ailments, such as lumbago and possession.

The root has an aromatic smell, it contains inulin, a carbohydrate similar to fructose, it is also called elecampane starch. Because of its sweet taste, the substance is contained in some diabetic foods; inulin is considered a sweetener.

Hildegard von Bingen: The plant was used by Hildegard both internally and externally. For example, she recommended against lung pain: B. a drink in which juniper berries, mullein and yarrow were boiled in good wine. Raw, finely chopped elecampane was then added to this liquid and eaten as an addition to the soup. She made ointment for scabies and the associated skin inflammation and itching. 15 parts of elecampane, 3 parts of fern, 1 part of chervil, some frankincense and sulfur were extracted in lard. The patient should rub it on himself for 5 days, then the same patient should cleanse himself in a bath so that the bark and the stench are removed from him.
