Information about hydrogen cyanide:

Hydrocyanic acid (hydrogen cyanide) is chemically bound in the so-called cyanogenic glycosides, which are also found in columbine. This hydrogen cyanide can be released through the action of certain enzymes.

Hydrocyanic acid causes e.g. B. the toxicity of sodium cyanide and potassium cyanide (potassium cyanide). Hydrocyanic acid is also released from bitter almonds (Prunus dulcis) and is also found in the kernels of stone fruit. In old recipes you can often find small amounts of foods containing hydrogen cyanide in the ingredient lists; in the right dosage, they have a stimulating and tolerable effect. "The dose makes the poison."

Even in the 1970s, it was common for children in the country to occasionally crack open an apricot, peach or cherry stone and enjoy eating the inside. It smelled like bitter almonds and tasted delicious. Every child knew instinctively that too much of it was unhealthy and decided to stop tasting it.
