The buckthorn grows up to 9 meters high. It has finely toothed, egg-shaped leaves 7.5 to 12 cm long with pronounced parallel veins that radiate from the main vein. The leaves are shiny green on the upper side and a lighter, dull green on the underside. The smooth bark is reddish-brown to silver-grey. In early to mid-spring, the tree produces tiny flowers with five greenish-yellow petals that grow in umbel-shaped clusters. Red berries appear that are dark purple or black. The berries have yellow flesh and two to three seeds each.
