Meadow Rue is a perennial, flowering plant that grows up to 1 m high. The leaves have three lobes and sit on a long, narrow petiole. The inflorescence is an erect or arched flower panicle with leaf-like, lobed bracts, often growing at the base. The male flower has a bell-shaped calyx made up of four sepals in greenish-white or purple hues. Many long, purple stamens with large anthers at the tip hang from the calyx. The female flower has a cluster of unripe fruits with stems in shades of purple. A grape has 4 to 9, sometimes up to 14 fruits.
There are many species of meadow rue, this one grows from Alaska and western Canada to California, Wyoming and Colorado.
